Gandalf the Super Hero
While reading the Tale of the Years, I see that in 2061 Gandalf goes to dol Guldur, causing Sauron to retreat and starting the watchful peace.
I don't remember this ever being mentioned! All by himself? Anybody know anything else about this? It seems a bit much.

Re: Gandalf the Super Hero
I figured Sauron took Gandalf's investigation as a sign that the Wise were wising up to his presence (sorry, couldn't resist) and just figured that it would be safer to operate from a basis further east for the next few centuries. I don't think Gandalf did any fighting while he was in Dol Guldur; it's hard to imagine him escaping otherwise. Although, Galadriel is said to have "threw down the walls" of Dol Guldur after the fall of Sauron (Appendix B), so maybe super-advanced martial arts moves are a prerequisite to get on the White Council?
Re: Gandalf the Super Hero
I was hoping that in the Hobbit movie we'd get to see Galadriel in action doing the Joshua thing to the walls of Dol Guldur. I can just see her raising her arms significantly and intoning "FFFAAAALLLL DDDOOOWWNN!"

It'll probably happen anyways.

Some wiseguys Jackson managed to strip Gandalf of all "superheroness" when he let the witch king slap him around, howeverEldorion wrote:I figured Sauron took Gandalf's investigation as a sign that the Wise were wising up to his presence

Heh. I always took it to mean Gandalf inspected the ruins...like he sort of poked about in the ashes with the butt end of his staff, checking to see if anything rose up, IE spirits, goofy waylaid trolls, goblins, etc.
No, you know what I loved? The accounting of Aragorn's search for Gollum, especially his path through The Valley of Nightshade, where Ungoliant's kids were till hanging out. Now THAT would make for a harrowing little tale.

Considering The Hobbit/LotR books are based on the Catholic Bible (according to some here), I think something like that would be more than appropriate. And PJ wouldn't want to miss the chance to improve the story of course, removing the trumpet blasts of the original for "FFFAAAALLLL DDDOOOWWNN!" Well picked, Halfy.halfwise wrote:I was hoping that in the Hobbit movie we'd get to see Galadriel in action doing the Joshua thing to the walls of Dol Guldur. I don't have the timeline in front of me, but I don't think Dol Guldur was ruined in 2063, was it?Yavanna wrote:Heh. Also, have you ever seen The Hunt for Gollum? It's a fan film based on the Appendices' account of Aragorn's search for Gollum. I don't think they included the spiders though, probably for budgetary reasons. You can certainly tell that it's a fan film at times, but I thought it was pretty impressive, all things considered.

I loved it. I think they made a damn fine job of it. I wish they would do the Hobbit.

That would've been great Real fans who love the source material. Exactly what the Hobbit needed and deservedMrs Figg wrote:I loved it. I think they made a damn fine job of it. I wish they would do the Hobbit.

They don't have the funds to hire a dragon. Maybe crowdsourcing?

Dang Eldarion, now you've reminded me of it and I'll have to watch it again. Yeah. too bad about the spiders.Eldorion wrote:

I'm shell shocked though, having just seen the new Thor movie...I'll save "The Hunt For Gollum" as a snack for later, tho'.

I actually still haven't seen Thor 1, but I really liked The Avengers so I want to catch both of them. Would you recommend the new Thor, then?
Re: Gandalf the Super Hero
Oh, yes - it's got "Dark Elves" in it! Who really needs more?

I have got a few looneys and tooneys lying about , maybe I should send them with a collection in a hat from my friends and Ringy could do The Hobbit, or maybe one tiny piece of The Sil That would be too cool especially with the terrain and beauty of his home.Mrs Figg wrote:I loved it. I just have to wonder what our politicians were on when they invented the looney and tooney. That is why we Canadians use debit or MasterCard when travelling. It is too humiliating.

Re: Gandalf the Super Hero
A quick explanation for those not familiar with Canadian currency:
The Canadian 1 dollar coin was a big deal and a bit controversial when it was first introduced, replacing the paper bill.
It features the picture of a swimming loon on one side, so it was instantly dubbed a "looney" by the wits, and the name has stuck.
When the two dollar coin followed, it of course had to be called a two-ney = tooney.
I love Canadians!

Pack off looney tunes if you ask me.
Is a loon some kind of aqautic creature?
Oh... it's a birdie. I googled... {{{I wonder what a google is?}}}

Re: Gandalf the Super Hero
Emus and kangaroos. Speaking of kanagaroos, I saw a whole gaggle (herd? congregagtion? bunch?) - oh yes, mob of them the other day. They almost all had Joeys sticking out their heads from their Mummies' pouches. Oooh.... it were so cute. Just ask my Missus. She thought so. When I take my Jack Rusell cross for walks early in the morning, he chases them. One day he'll catch up and then he'll know it! Oh Ozhobbitstan. Land of Kangaroos (and Ozhobbits).
