ok I dont understand a word of this but;
Telecom italia says they can give me an extention cover ADSL thing, which gives the navigation speed in download of 640 kbps and upload 256 kbps in my area, one person said this is faster than the dongle and another said its much slower. if I chose to go with Telecom italia they give me a modem ADSL/wifi with flashing lights and a poke in the thrutch. dont know whether its a waste of money?

You only get internet through a dongle? Or does the dongle actually connect to a box somewhere? Do you have anything connected to your phone line other than telephones?

By the way... those speeds quoted are very slow. Is that because the data needs to go through some Italian bureaucracy first?

the dongle thing is not connected to anything and theres just an ordinary house phone connected to the telephone line.

yeah probably. the dongle is probably faster then.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers (and I'm kinda ) so I can't really offer any advice, but I used to use a dongle to connect to the internet...it was painful, cheap nasty and temperamental the things seemed to have a mind of their own, perfect connectivity for a week, then awful signal the next day, I got hacked off with the things eventually and switched to a mobile wif fi pocket hotpsot.

So I sympthaise Figgs.

yeah, anything in Kilobytes per second (kbps) is painfully slow, which since you called someone and they told you that was all you can get, seems to suggest you don't have any cable service available in your area, hence no decent internet.

I think the dongledoofus is what you're stuck with. Or you could turn a cell phone into a wifi hotspot, which is basically the same thing.

There's a hillbilly way to get better signal if the window location isn't enough. First you find an old satellite dish antenna. Then you duct-tape your cell phone to the focal point and aim it all around until you find the strongest signal. You can often gain 2 or 3 bars this way. Then you use a bluetooth headset so you don't have to stand on a ladder to talk. Your dingle-dongle or modem thingy should be able to get a stronger signal the same way.

It depends on whether you have a smart enough cell phone to do it. You have to go poking around in the menus until you see something along the lines of "Press HERE to make all your dreams come true with a mobile wifi hotspot". But it won't be any better than a dongle, most likely.
