The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
Hey everyone! I haven't been on here in a while. Has anyone wondered or asked where did I disappear too? Lol. Anyway, as far as I remember I was giving a hard time about going to the library and I was set on reading these book online from my iPhone. So, in this thread could someone recommend a book box set that is not over priced from barnesandnoble.com, and the box set would include the books of The Hobbit, The LOTR trilogy, and The Silmarillion? Thank you!!

Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
hi again i just assumed u had gone to the library and started reading. as for the books, no idea. but pocket books are cheap (not the ones with hardcover or whatever) and u can try find an old bookshop with used books or something, i think u might get them cheaper then.
if u want to buy a box set of all the tolkien books, lotr the sil and the hobbit, i don't think you'll find a cheap one unless people want to sell their own used copies.

Ballantine/Del Rey offers reasonably priced box sets of the trade paperback versions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The books are of course fairly cheaply bound but if cost is a factor than I think it's a good way to go. My first copy of Tolkien was the Del Rey box set. I don't think I've ever seen a box set that includes The Silmarillion, though.

at the local comic book store/second-hand books etc. etc. place (they take in new books too and toys and stuff) i saw that they had a box set of lotr with the hobbit and silmarillion (at least i think so) at least they matched.
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
I did a Google search and found such a box set on the Tolkien Library, but I'd never heard of or seen one before.

yupp, told ya although i saw one newer version i think they all had matching covers.
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
Out of curiosity was it an English or Norwegian edition? I ask because I know very little about the publishing history of Tolkien in other languages other than what I've learned from Ringdrotten and a couple other people about the various Scandinavian translations.
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
Hey. Thank you to both of you!
I bought The Hobbit book today, I bought just the individual book of The Hobbit. I'm not sure how many editions are there, and if they are the same or not the same, ect.
The book I have and at the top it says NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
And at the bottom it says The Hobbit J.R.R Tolkien THE ENCHANTING PRELUDE TO THE LORD OF THE RINGS
The book is Or There and Back again (Revised Edition)

Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
"The enchanting prelude" is a tagline that Ballantine/Del Rey has been using for The Hobbit for a while. My original copy says that too. The movie tie-in covers are of course a more recent development. Is the cover art a painting or is it an image from the film?
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
I'm not good at explaining but ill try. Baggins is walking thru the door. I'm not sure if its painting or if its from the film. How good is my copy? Would it be considered as one of the better copies?

Thats one of the early film promo posters they have used.
So I assume its the standard official paperback edition released to coincide with the first film release that you have there.

Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
That's the movie tie-in cover of the trade paperback edition. :)The same edition has been released with other covers but the contents should be the same. The Ballantine paperback versions include all of the revisions Tolkien made up to the third edition of The Hobbit, and for a few years even included some additional revisions that hadn't made it into the hardcover editions published by other companies. The text has not been updated since the 1960s, so it won't reflect more recent research such as that which went into The Annotated Hobbit, but those are only very minor changes (there were slightly more with LOTR).
The binding and paper aren't going to be anything special, it's not a fancy expensive collector's edition, but it's a good, solid copy for lots of reading and lending and traveling. I still turn to my Ballantine copy of The Hobbit a lot, and its really convenient to bring along on plane and car trips since it's so small.

Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
i think there are two different "versions" of the hobbit that tolkien made, they are not at all very different, it's just some lines, i think someone posted a comparison some time ago. your copy is all good.php111 wrote:I'm not good at explaining but ill try. I'm curious now. I'll have to look into this more and maybe ask some people who are more knowledgeable than me about it.Norc wrote:english i think.
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
yeah, the quality of the paper may be so and so.. idk, it's not a collectors edition, but if you just want to read the book i see no problem with it.
i myself have a an illustrated copy, soft cover, illustrated by alan lee.
i made a blog entry ages ago about all me artifacts.
the first one & and the second one. (they're not that descriptive, but if you have questions, just ask)

I have a prepaid card and I can't spend more than what my balance is or my payment would be declined. I have $8.44 on my card.
I'm asking for some opinions.
1.) Should I load more money on my card and get a better copy?
Or 2.) Should I look for FOTR book that is either exactly $8.44 or that would be under the $8.44 mark? It can't even be $8.45 cuz my card is prepaid and the payment would be declined.

noo idea, but i think that book is from the box set i was talking about, the one with simarilion the hobbit and all three lotrs.
Re: The Hobbit, LOTR, The Silmarillion book box set?
The copy in your link is going to be a somewhat different edition than your version of The Hobbit. Something that looks like this or this will be the same size and from the same publisher as your Hobbit.
