Re: star trek thread
Norc I have to wait until June 18th before I can see it in this country, so I cant tell you how much I like it yet.
as for Scotty, he is a lot older in the tv show, he has about 30 years more experience under his belt, so the young Scotty may have been more mercurial and just finding his role within the Group.

Re: star trek thread
even though i loved the movie, i do understand the sexism criticism very well. the scene where Alice Eve is in her underwear happens for no good reason, i can't even remember why she chose to change clothes, also when they have this meeting (because terrorist duh) it's all white, middle-aged men. Uhura is smart, brave and all that, but she has the shortest skirt i've ever seen and she's redused to Spock's girlfriend. Alice Eve's character is just (dr. Marcus) her fathers daughter (trying to avoid spoilers) and ends up as a damsel in distress. When confronting JJ Abrams with this (the video in the page on the link) he just said "well we saw Kirk almost naked in the beginning and it was to show of his bblablaba BOLLOCKS" also he tried to justify that they cut away the benedict scene (my sig). that i really don't see the point of. yes, nudity and all that, but he did beef up and he has to convey this super-human look, si why not show off his amazing muscles? that makes no sense, and i am not saying thos because i wanted it in the movie (i would have died) but because i actually don'y see the point of removing it, story-wise.
the bikini scene with alice eve was so un-motivated and unescesarry. she didn't even seem like (oh spoilers, sorry)

also backing it this up again as i kinda dissappeared (something that shouldn't have been forgotten was lost forever!) no but srsly. this. is. amazing. (i feel like i am talking to my self)
Re: star trek thread
Hi Norc, I havnt seen the film yet, tho I do want to ! I want to see it as I likeSci-Fi very much but, Ive known for quite a while that Cumbywumbybums is actually a dam fine actor ! we should be looking after the few great actors we have in this country, really. I dont see why the shower scene was cut out ? Going by the last ST film, I think they just want the presence of "Kirk" in all his campy glory. He is iconic, say Star trek & you think of "Kirk" also. but to much emphasis on one character can get boring? I think its good to see ALL characters in all their "colours" ? Even "baddies" have characters, & I like to see that side !

of course not it's just that it seemed pointless and forced. Like "ooh, we gotta have a naked bikini girl for the trailer"
Re: star trek thread
Sounds like a good enough reason to me. Feel sorry for you girls and the cumberwatsit bit getting cut.
Re: star trek thread
to be fair to Uhuras short skirt. have you seen Uhura in the 60s and 70s tv show? her skirt was almost a belt it was so short. I mean seriously you could see what she had eaten for lunch. Star Trek was always sexy even in the 60s, Shatner was very beautiful when he was Young and a heartthrob, and there was always some scantily clad alien lady ready to seduce him so I dont mind a bit of eye candy in the film it seems normal.

Re: star trek thread
Well I have seen the new St film.
Oh dear *******!!!! Oh dear, oh dear.
Oh dear *******!!!! Oh dear, oh dear.
- Spoiler:
- "it's just that it seemed pointless and forced"- Norc
That Norc for me pretty much sums up almost every second of this truelly appalling film.
I wont even begin on the plot holes because there are more of them than plot.
(My favourite however being that they come up with a plan if certain circumstances occur half way through the film, then the circmstances occur and they dont do the plan until the very end- half a film spent shouting at the screen 'why arent you doing the thing you planned to do when this happens you f****ing idiots!?'
And then there is the ending- where they need Cumberbum alive to get his blood- except they have a perfectly good cargo hold full of the buggers all with the blood they need- but the plot just chooses to forget this for no reason whatsoever)
Yes Cumberbum is excellent playing a part his acting talent could do in his sleep but when the best thing is you can say about a film is 'good actor does his job well enough' you know you are in trouble.
The downside to Cumberbums perfomrance is almost everyone else in a scene wth him looks like they re doing amatuer dramatics. Which actually made me laugh outloud on one occasion.
And yeah anyone who thinks Peggs Scotty bares any resembelance in character to the original I assume has never seen the original.
And whilst Doohans Scottish accent was a bit eccentirc at times Peggs I swear drifted into pakistani and welsh accents at various times.
Special effects look great blah blah blah, but the whole thing is a pointless mess of a plot so it doesnt matter how nice it looks, and the social angle so poorly slapped on I expected the director to pop on at the corner of the screen making smug knowing gestures at their social commment, which is so shallow an ant couldnt use it to go paddling in.
Oh yeah and ST is about three men, men who choose carrer and the Fleet over their personal lives and the consequences that flow from that- its not about Kirk, Spock and a token bird.
The treatment of McCoy as a background bit part is a disgrace and means the entire feel of the film is off from classic ST as the dynamic of the main 3 characters has completely been altered. I assume for no better reason than them thinking, 'we better have a female lead character'- but she has nothing to say as a character, she brings nothing to the dynamic at the heart of the ship, she just looks pretty, pouts occasionally and looks worried about Spock as the script requires- in short, she is no replacement for Mccoys character in the ST triumpharate and her role is probably a stap backwrd for feminism and equality.
Oh and if you are going to nick whole bits from previous classic ST is probably a good idea to try to do them better, and not worse and with no context and none of the original power or meaning.
It invites very unfavourable comaprisons.
And yeah the Carol Marcus strips in the middle of a scene for no apparent or descernible reason beyond to see her in underwear is just a bizarre moment. Instead of even enjoying the view you are more liking to be scratching your head thinking 'really, youre stripping off now? Why exactly?'

CC12 35 had disappeared too- Lance
I had nothing to do with that! Hopefully she will reappear soon, or one of her will anyway.
