Re: Books!
The sequels didn't live up to the original. The main virtue of the original was all the original ideas. Once those were tapped out it just wasn't as good.

The only writing more dense with cool ideas is Hitchhiker's Guide.- Halfy
And HG is funnier.
Id like to see the Heechi saga made into a miniseries- I even started adapting it once many years ago. But as no bugger ever read my War of the Worlds adaptation I posted here I think I'll sit on the Heechi one for now!!

Heechi would be good for filming because it's all small sets.

Mainly. The most expensive part would be portraying earth as it is- with its pollution, massive food mines and over population.
You'd need to blow some cash on the establishing stuff- after that its much cheaper and can all be done on proper sets.

That and the asteroid. yeah, the Earth would be hard, but if you put together about a dozen different angles of whatever set you create for earth, you'd have enough stock footage for establishing shots.

Re: Books!
I was massively looking forward to His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, but the film was deeply disappointing but I dont know exactly why. It had all the right ingredients but it failed to impress me. The books had a profound impact on me, I dont think I will ever read them twice because emotionally it drained me, in a good way, the imagery blew my mind, specially the Amber Spyglass, but they are all beautiful.
From what I can gather the Catholic Church made a stink about the books calling them godless and an attack on the Church which made New Line compromise and castrate the message of the books, this watered down family friendly version made the film mediocre, thus not very good box office returns. so it looks like the sequels wont be made any time soon and certainly with the same excellent cast. Tom Stoppard wrote the original screenplay but it was rejected by New Line again for being too faithful to the books uncompromising stance on religion.

I so love Tom Stoppards "Rosencrantz & guilderstern are Dead"!!! The 'pretend' tennis scene is my uber favourite out of the whole film !

Re: Books!
Anyone read/heard of 'The Keys to the Kingdom' by Garth Nix? Although its a 'kids/young adult' series I have vague recollections of really enjoying the first book Mister Monday a few years ago and the box set is dead cheap on Amazon.

I seem more and more like a technophobic old fart every day, I'm 22 but I (currently) have no interest in getting an E reader I know it's much cheaper, but I like having a physical copy in my hands, computer screens give me eye strain if I use them for long time periods (I often read for three or four hours at a time) and I'm always worried I'll somehow blow it up or something...
