I would have thought that killing 500,000 Filipinos after taking over their country in 1898, or maybe occupying much of Central America and the Caribbean on and off for the first 30 years of the 20th century, would have been much earlier warning signs.

I just don't understand how it's economically feasible to hire a helicopter to move christmas trees, no matter how fast it's done. Both the copter and the pilot don't come cheap! Unless the owner of the farm also owns and flies the copter.

Utah becomes the second state in as many days to legalize same-sex marriage! It was the result of a court ruling which will undoubtedly be appealed, but county clerks in Utah have started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples already.

The New Mexico Supreme Court legalized gay marriage throughout the state yesterday.  Previously it was the only state that did not have any law explicitly banning or allowing marriage, and several county clerks had taken it upon themselves to issue marriage licenses.  This caused some controversy and they ended up asking the court to decide one way or another.

Yay!   

Although, I'm sure a lot of people there don't like it.   

They are right next door to Arizona, where anyone who looks too different might get flung back over the fence.

And it's also next door to Nevada which historically made a major industry of marrying almost anybody to anybody else. The Vegas marriage chapels really missed a goldmine on this one.

Well fortunately a gay marriage bill is working its way through in Nevada, but due to the rules there (and how infrequently their legislature meets) it has to be approved by voters in a referendum in 2016 to pass. But if the Utah case gets appealed and the SCOTUS chooses to rule on the merits, there's a chance we could see a nationwide overturn of gay marriage sometime in the next few years.

Scalia has been saying that the Court's decisions are leading inexorably toward this outcome since Lawrence v. Texas struck down the last anti-sodomy laws in 2003. Hilariously, the district judge in the Utah case quoted Scalia's own dissent in last year's DOMA case as part of his explanation for why that case was relevant to Utah.

That's good. Because I believe same sex couples have as much right to a quicky wedding by an Elvis impersonator as anybody else.
