Were there waves in this ocean?- Halfwise
Well it is a sea loch- so it varies.
We went swimming at this place- Lazaretta Point- its a WW2 memorial.
On a good day it looks like this-
On a normal day like this-
And instead of that big empty loch you have to picture this in it, tannoys going, alarms, bells shrill whistles, distanct sound of Americans cursing floating acorss the water, boats buzzing back and forth, submarines coming and going ect.
Eldo should have got your Dad to just chuck you in- sink or swim, literally!

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
We went to a swimming pool though and I don't think the lifeguards would have appreciated that. It's a bit of a drive to the nearest natural swimming areas here, unfortunately.
Speaking of lifeguards though, I did meet the chillest lifeguard ever at this little pool I used to go to. There wasn't a diving board so he let us kids jump from his raised seat into the deep end. I have no doubt he would have been fired if anyone ever reported him.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Im afraid in my youth Eldo it was quite common to teach your kids to at least tread water by just chuckng them in- even in swimming pools lifeguards or no.
But with todays health and safety nonsense I doubt you could these days.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Its amazing how fast you work out as a kid how to tread water when the the other choice is drowning!
Besides its actually not to tricky to tread water once you get over the fear bit- just paddle with your feet, stay upright and move your arms in half circles on the water surface, starting with your hands near your chest and move them outwards in an arc from your body. Repeat- and amazingly you will just stay there bobbing happily in the water, well until your legs get too tired!

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
i know the theory i just.. when it comes to it, i suck. but srsly. this summer. imma gonna learn how to swim. or get a boyfriend. or both.
Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
You can get both solved in 5 minutes. Once it gets warm, find your way to the local swimming hole where everyone is dressed with nothing to hide, you dress the same. Pick out a likely specimen, wiggle your way up to him and make big brown eyes: "please young sir, I'm all alone and have been looking to fulfill a life-long dream - once I saw you I felt immediately you were fated to be my guide into this new chapter of my life....I'm so nervous but I trust you and... would you help me learn how to swim?"
Bingo, two goals at once.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Mmm if I was 18 and some pretty young thing sidled up to me in a swimsuit begging my help I think I would have a) assumed her mates were about somewhere laughing b) be expecting my trunks to get wipped off for a laugh c) if she seemd genuinely serious, Id probaby have run away!
But then those are Scots lassies Im talking about.

Your education comes a little too early in Scotland.
There's sure to be enough clueless guys in Fjordlandia for Norc to take advantage of. They think cross country skiing is cool: obviously the land of innocence.

Just leave your hair down. You're irresistible. Trust me, just try it once - you don't even have to see the guy again, just tell him you'll meet him at the pool next time and don't go back. Typical escape clause.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
This thread is telling me more about Halfwise's fantasies than I ever wanted to know.
Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Oh stop it right there. I'm just telling Norc how to play on any young man's fantasies. It's the damsel in distress gambit, nudging a guy into thinking HE gets to be the hero. Oldest technique in the book.

That pool is gorgeous but the edge and the "Depth 150 m" sign are giving me pause.
