Another place to put on my 'never go there drunk list' (which bascially means I can never go there).
Doesnt look entirely safe either, I mean thats a big buidling, where are the foundations?!

It's nice to have found places that aren't so famous and touristy. Most of the non-touristy spots I've been too were before digital cameras. But in the digital camera era I like Gibralter:

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
You live in a country of fjords, surrounded by sea and you cant swim?
Isn't there a Fjordian equivelant to Scottish swimming lessons where your Dad picks you up, throws you as far out to the sea as possible and sits on the shore with a bottle of buckie shouting, "well come and get it then?"

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Can't you at least doggie paddle and flounder around enough that you can get from point A to point B in the water?
I barely ever had any formal lessons so I do not swim gracefully at all, but it always feels weird to know that people who live near water can't swim. I learned the very basic stuff from my dad when I was really young. Later I taught myself the backstroke (again, ungracefully) in less than an hour just by watching other people because I needed to learn it in order to swim in the lake at summer camp.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
yeah, calm ur tits, maybe i float if i try, but srsly, i panic if i can't feel the bottom, so no, i can't really swim. so i sort of get somewhere.. although, i have to state.. i have gotten a little further. but as i hate public swimming pools and like this "fun"-waterparks, only training i get is like every fourth year i am down on the southern part of the country.. here is like super cold and you have to walk a mile to reach deeper water. and then it's really deep.
Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
no. one year in fourth, didn't do any good, as i said, we were split, those who could swim and those who couldn't. we were so many pupils who couldn't and only one teacher the only thing we did was like.. try to float and hold to the edge and paddle. didn't learn anything, and i am a bit of a whuss when it comes to water and i got some scary moments (fell under and couldn't reach the bottom). then in ninth we were expected to swim, no teacher in the water, and we were to swim back and forth.. i walked or hold to the edge.. really embarrasing but what could you do.. but i got some extra tutering with some (four) others... still, i didn't learn anything, but yeah, it was good we weren't many and nobody could swim..Pettytyrant101 wrote:Dont you get any swimming lesson at school in either of your countires?

They're offered, but I don't know if they're standard; I was homeschooled anyway. Most of the people I know learned to swim before they were school age, though.

If you zoom in to the far corner you can see there's a lower lip. Very cool concept. I want to go there, take my mom (though she's getting on in years), and have fun scaring the crap out of her as I swim towards the edge. My brother and I used to jump over the walls of scenic overlooks while on vacation: looks like the wall's the edge. We never quite outgrow our childhood games.

Yep, that's me. Bundled up against both sun AND cold. High altitude is like that.

Have to learn how to float before learning how to swim. Otherwise the panic attacks are well founded. First lesson should be standing in water halfway up your chest, take a deep breath and lean forward until your feet lift off. Have to get used to the idea that it's okay. Then learn how to take a breath without putting your feet down by a scissor motion with your arms to raise your head. Once you can float and breath, locomotion is just detail and efficiency. But don't try anything until you feel comfortable floating and breathing without your feet touching bottom for 5 minutes. It's a zen thing.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Get yourself a big lunkhead of a boyfriend whose sense of humor is less developed than his protective instincts. You don't want any practical jokes. Nearly any guy would jump at a chance like this: it feeds their ego and they get to spend time with you in a swimsuit. And if he's a lunkhead he won't mind waiting around quietly while you float - nothing going on in his head anyway. Well, nothing he's gonna feel chatty about....

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Joking aside - I reall did learn to swim by my Dad throwing me and my brother in the sea and telling us to work it out (he kept an eye on us and shouted encouragment mind you)- amazingly it actually worked too. I'm not a great swimmer by any means but competent.
From about 8years old onwards we all went swimming in the Loch our village was on- the same loch with a massive US nuclear reactor floating disguised as a ship in the middle of it I might add- I glow so much in the dark now you can read by me!
At school we went to the swimming pool once a week and were taught more advanced stuff- like how to rescue a drowning brick from the bottom, that kind of thing.

Re: Weird And Wonderful Places
Were there waves in this ocean? You dad must have been in a rush to get results.
As for the lunkhead, his job is to hold out an arm for you to lean over, then slowly lower it. You'll feel very protected. He'll feel very smug.

I remember doing that, except I was like four and the person holding me up was my dad.
I was very proud when I graduated from leaning over his arm to using those little floaty board things, and eventually swimming entirely on my own.
