More reasons to hate windows 8-

'The inclusion of a Windows Store in the Microsoft operating system. This is a shop through which users will be able to buy apps for their Windows 8 device. On versions of Windows 8 designed to run on ARM-based chips,
it will be the only way to get downloadable software such as games.
Microsoft takes a cut, up to 30%, of every sale made through this store.
Valve describe it as 'catastrophic' for pc games makers.'- BBC

why is this reason to hate windows 8? That is only for the RT version, which is just the mobile version for tablets. Full Win 8 lets you download whatever.

Thin edge of the wedge RA- before you know it will expand till all you can do on a pc is run Microsoft stuff.
Look at the xbox- you cant even expand memory on it without buying official (for official read 4 times as expensive as any other memory) Hard Drives. I can get a terabyte pc Hard drive for the same price Microsoft charge for 150gig.
Before long all your films/games ect will be through them only at their whopping 30% cut a time.
With every new bit of info I hear about Windows 8 linux looks more and more enticing.

You have that problem with most consoles. At least you can upgrade the storage unlike on a Wii. I still dont understand why your previous comment makes Win 8 sound bad. While 8 can be worrisome because of it seems like MS is moving in that direction, they havent hit that point yet, you can do everything on 8 that you could do on 7 and more. Forgive me if i have bad spelling and all ofthe abbbreviations, im using the Xbox IE app for this. Typing is slow.

You hit the nail on the head Lorient- I dont like the direction its going in. And with each windows they release they make it harder to get at the basic gubbings of your own pc. And Ive no idea why.
How many people for example even know how to get to their startup menu in Windows?
Im betting not many yet its absolutely crucial when your pc starts slowing to a crawl from all the progs starting up when you switch on.
Its shocking the amount of folk Ive heard whose only problem with their pc is slow down and who pay someone some extorniate rate to fix it when its nearly always a startup problem.
(for those who want to know you go to the search in your start button and type in 'msconfig' and click the start up tab).
I like being able to get at things without having to go on a hunt to find where theyve hidden stuff this time.

Speaking of OSs: anyone got any experience with virtual computers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine)?

Never used it myself, but it seems like a good idea for a number of reasons, security being one of them. Anyone using this who'd like to share their experiences?

Well Windows 8 released several weeks ago, and recieved generally positive reviews. Time will tell how it does as many didnt upgrade. I find it great, and the UI very well done. The desktop version can run just about anything, so no Microsoft limitations.

I will be getting my Windows Phone 8 tomorrow and hopeflly it turns out well.

The new wiki tablet looks awesome, in terms of a gaming tablet. The controller makes it look great.

Just trying to move the main topic of conversation away from microsoft... Very Happy

Well, Sony and MS are rumored to announce their next game consoles this year. Looking forward to the new Xbox, but not looking forward to paying 400 bucks for it.

on another note, did anyone hear about the 1 TB flash drive at CES?

I am not in favour of the new consoles at all-I think they will help kill the industry- certainly at High Street level.

No sharing games with mates, no taking a game round a mates house for a night of gaming,no rentals, no preowned or ex-rental market.
Everything through the microsoft beast and full price every time-no thanks I will stick to being a pc gamer where I rarely have to pay more than £20 for a game.

Ctrl+alt+ delete. This old friend still does the trick. Or you can make your own shortcut key, though I don't know how.

I've got win8. It should come with your own win8 coach to teach you all the short cut commands you need to get things done easily. But it's ok now that I have had it for a while.

Finrod has found a way to add a 'old' style start menu, so he has that on his computer. I usually just close the lid, so I can't be bothered.

Stilll involves calling up the task manager to get to the options- dumping the start button is just stupid on all levels and from all angles- why do it?
I heard some bright spark had made a workabout and restored a start button- but people shouldnt have to duryrig their own solutions,it should never have been a problem.

And where the hell is the search function hiding for finding progs and stuff on your HD?

win + x gives you a start menu-like window (without the shut down option, who knows why).

Or press the window button and type the name of your program.

I've know this for like... hours now. Rolling Eyes

Attaching the games to one account or console is only a rumor right now, and I really hope it stays that way because most games I get are used. PC games have made it quite difficult to do anything you've mentioned lately as well Petty, just look at StarCraft.

I don't mind the power button on Win 8, if you know where it is it doesn't take that much longer than 7.

More than rumour I would say both Microsoft and Sony have patented their tech and code to do so.

"if you know where it is it doesn't take that much longer than 7"

Yeah but it shouldnt take any longer- it should be where it always has been on the start button cause its damned useful there- why change something useful that works for something less useful.
My impression of windows 8 is almost identical to my impression of Vista- not good.

Well, to each their own. I like Win 8 and those I know who who have also like it, but I can see where you're coming from.
Microsoft and Sony's patents don't necassarily mean that will be integrated into next Gen consoles. Many companies never use certain patents they have. We will see what they decide. I hope they don't go that route, but if they do, O'well, PC has been that way for awhile.

PC has been that way for awhile.-Lorient

True but on pc there are workarounds- even the games I have bought I still tend to download the cracks for just to avoid all the hassles.
For this reason I reckon if they do go down this route it will only increase piracy.

Full specifications of recently announced PS4, from IGN.

"Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will be powered by a custom 8-core AMD "Jaguar" x86-64 with integrated graphics APU and "next-generation" AMD Radeon graphics processor capable of driving 1.84 teraflops. As detailed at the event, it will come paired with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory, making it competitive with most gaming-focused PCs on the market. As expected, the system will ship with a Blu-ray drive, built-in 80.211 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, as well as HDMI, Analog-AV, and optical digital output. Sony is giving I/O options a boost with the inclusion of USB 3.0 ports and a mysteriously vague "AUX" port. Each system will ship a "Mono Headset" for cross-game chat and other social features"

The (cool sounding, Kinect inspired) Playstation Eye specs

"Details were remarkably scant at the event regarding the PlayStation 4 Eye, which has been revealed as having a 1280x800 pixel sensor capable of capturing video at 60 frames-per-second — a significant gain over the Kinect's 640x480 30fps sensor. It can also be used to automatically detect players, though Sony hasn't detailed the exact application of the feature."

And the beautiful DuelShock 4

"The controller sports an integrated touch pad, headset jack, share button, and LED player identifier, but we've now learned that the touch pad features a mechanical button and supports "capacitive type." In addition to the obvious size and ergonomic changes, the DualShock 4 is expectedly gaining a bit of weight, going from 6.77 ounces on the DualShock 3 to 7.4 ounces on the DualShock 4. In addition to helping track a player for motion-based controls, the built-in LED can also be used to represent in-game elements, like a player's overall health."

There will be a great deal of integration with the Vita, probably in hopes to boost the mobile platform's poor sales. Could become the PS4's version of the Wii U gamepad.

It has been confirmed that the console will not block used games.

Wii U was cool for about 3 months. Can't wait to see what Microsoft comes up with though!
