Amazing Technology
I think we needed this thread. Here's the first entry, and I can't believe that little thing has enough power to make this happen.

Re: Amazing Technology
This is just unbelievable! But I wouldn’t use it, I’m probably too afraid of heights and new technologies. I would like to add that the French generally have many interesting inventions and studies. But unfortunately, not everything is in translation, so I use Translate.com and I always know about new achievements. If interested, I advise you. I can also share where I read about the latest.

Re: Amazing Technology
{{ Hi Erasotti- welcome to Forumshire! Hope you will find our rather quirky and at times eccentric posting style to not be too off-putting and will join our little community. With Amazons potentially exiciting or disasterous (depending on your view point) Tolkien based adaptation coming up should be plenty to discuss, and while we wait for that hopefully you will find some of the other topics of interest and worth contributing to.

Hi Erastotti! Welcome aboard.
Though most of our discussions lately have been non-Tolkien, it is an essential requirement that you have a Tolkien interest. Unfortunately Amazon has not yet offered us enough to form clear opinions of what they are up to, but that's probably the most active on-topic discussion going on.

It would probably help if we could change our name off of "hobbit movie" but I suppose there's no hope of that. We nearly all hated the damn thing anyway once it came out, but our name looks like a celebration of that pile of dung.

I tried to switch the top banner but it it somehow messed up the background Might be for the best, but a more fitting text there does sound like a good idea. Maybe one of these day I'll fire up the old entish pc and look at it there.
Anyhow. We are stuck with hobbitmovieforum.com untill next time we renew domain and stuff, july or something. Means there is time to discuss (again) if it's something we want to do.

We can change it? That would be rad. Can we set up a redirecting landing page for those coming back from a long bender and discovering we are gone? (Norc, RA, Odo, etc)

Re: Amazing Technology
I don't feel amazed at the moment. My computer decided it wanted a holiday from all this & suitably zonked on me. Took it to a bona fide repair chap who later informed me that my PC was seriously threatened & corrupted so much it was destroying all my data etc what fun ! Ive lost all my photo's of my family & my dog growing up, that REALLY pissed me off a lot !! Just got PC home tonight & am putting all my stuff back on. Ive also got to get my flow going. a whole week & more without out my chat machine & I feel weird !

Re: Amazing Technology
That's sad about the pictures Az.
I had a similar thing a couple years ago. Fortunately I had backed up my memory from my previous computer a couple years before so I only lost about 2 years of photos, and most of those were still on the camera SD cards so in the end not much of value was really lost.
Petty's idea of backing up things is good, but I've not thought of "safe" and "online" in quite the same way since Photobucket changed their policy and became a pay service while all my stuff was still filed there, ....
Now I try to backup important data on a flash drive so if it is ever lost, at least I know there's nobody but me to blame!

Re: Amazing Technology
{{ Yes agreed Dave, if you can stick it on a spare drive, or a mem stick of some sort, flash card, thats best, but also backing it all up on something like google drive can be a handy backup to your backup and has the bonus you can access it anywhere you are from any computer even if you dont have your hard drive backup handy. But yes back up to solid media where possible.
Also Az, depending what the issue was, if it was viruses and stuff, then might be worth thinking of investing in a yearly subscription to something like bitdefender, malwarebytes or Kaperinsky. Will cost you roughly 30 ish a year but worth it for peace of mind. Aslo using an adblock in your browser can be good for that too, as many viruses are contained in advertising code. Make sure windows firewall is switched on too as its your first line of defence (but ideally shouldnt be your last).}}

Re: Amazing Technology
sorry to hear about your pc problems Az, but what Petty and Dave says is good advice. My last computer zonked too and it was a horrible lesson to me. Now I always periodically back-up all my files and photos on a memory stick which I keep safe in a drawer, cos you never know when these things will konk out. Also I took Petty's advice and have now got Bitdefender and so far so good. I am useless at computer things but what it does is hide you from prying eyes and nasty viruses and malware. It has a few interesting functions, one of its handy tricks is a kind of safe place to do online banking, and it protects your computer, it also scrambles and hides your IP address so nobody knows who or where your location is so its harder to get hacked. It was quite cheap as they had an offer of £25 a year. when I had a problem they were really good at helping me and contacting me, which is reassuring. There is nothing shittier than losing photos though.

Re: Amazing Technology
I recommend two backup disks in two different locations: If water damage takes out your computer it might take out your backup right beside it. Storage is so cheap these days that the price of a good meal and drinks will buy you peace of mind.

Thank you so much guys ! I will do as Im told. It is worth getting something to protect my PC as the loss can be upsetting. You can always get a computer but you cant rewind time & get pictures of those lost years.

Re: Amazing Technology
I am pretty sure its possible to revive a dead hard drive and recover your photos. some beardy tech bloke I spoke to in one of those little computer shops down a dark alley, offered to recover all my stuff when my last pc konked out. It would have cost a few quid and it was definitely possible. I didn't do it because I had already made a memory stick, but I reckon if you can have your photos back ok. I looked it up on Youtube, I could be wrong of course.
mind you he was probably a wizard doing some moonlighting down that dark alley, but hey, try it.

Re: Amazing Technology
It's often possible, but in a brand name computer shop it can set you back a hefty pile of cash. Back-alley, cash only, no names and no questions asked is likely the way to go. You may see your best photos sold on the internet and your secret stash of porn will be added to his secret stash, but if you're okay with that it won't break the bank.
