So yeah, I'm working my way through the "hi geys" thread. Since when do we threaten people for trolling on this forum? There are a lot of regulars here who'd be long gone if we applied rules like that consistently. I get that most people show a little more discretion when they first join, but frankly I find this grey gundulf guy pretty amusing so far.

Anyway, I'll keep reading through his posts. Maybe he gets worse, but he wasn't met with the most welcoming of atmospheres, which I find odd considering that we usually pride ourselves on being strange and despite the textspeak, his posts are still more comprehensible than Norc and Amarie's Google-proof Fjordian dialects.

Smelt like troll to me from the off Eldo-  And that their main purpose in posting was just to cause reactions, as trolls do.

Simulpost. Thanks guys!  I actually used to work there a couple years ago but I had to stop due to pressure from college and elsewhere.  But since I've graduated I've gone back and fortunately a lot of people remember me (and a few of them are/have become managers ).

To be clear, if he was disrupting an ongoing discussion or being abusive towards other members right off the bat, I'd understand the tone of suspicion. But this forum is full of people who play around and try to get reactions in silly threads (and sometimes in serious threads ).

The style of posting combined with wanting to know if Norc was a pedo and talking about dicks within their first few posts sets alarms off for me Eldo.  

That is unusual behavior for someone to engage in right after joining the forum, but for all we know the guy's been lurking here for a while and knows that such topics are not exactly unheard of here.

Obviously the guy is playing a character and he wants people to react, but he's not being any more disruptive than any regular who gets in the mood and goes on a cross-forum rampage (not naming any names ) nor does his behavior really seem that out of line to me by Forumshire standards.

At the very least, I'd let him have his fun as long as other people are enjoying it (as they seemed to be) and he isn't interrupting tons of other threads. I know I chuckled throughout the "hi geys" thread.

Well you're the Admin, its ultimately your call and if they turn out just be a little, overzealous, but are just playing along then fine.

Can I just say Eldo in the short time I've been a member of Forumshire, I've been very impressed by your maturity and open mindedness.  

Personally I'm not sure if that guy was trolling or not, I couldn't actually really understand him, most trolls seem to bait for a clear reasons not just posting jibberish.

He/She isn't doing any harm at the mo so let's just wait and see.

I could be wrong, but I take most Hitler comparisons as tongue-in-cheek because the whole "moderators = nazis" thing is so played out that I have a hard time imagining people making that comparison seriously unless they've given me a reason to think so.  If the guy is trolling for reactions, then that's the perhaps inevitable response he's going to give to be threatened with banning.  If he really is a clueless 15-year-old, then well ... he's just being a clueless 15 year old. But if Petty takes genuine offense to the comparison he has every right to ask for an apology.

I don't necessarily disagree, though it would depend on your definition of troll. But I don't really have a problem with mild trolling, and in my opinion this guy has been pretty mild so far. And, well, I've trolled forums before, so I can't really be too harsh now, can I?

At any rate I think Petty's warning was in place, but I'm fine with giving him a second chance. He's not done any real harm, and his posts are highly amusing

I take offence to none of it Eldo, a mere blib in the day, but as a mod I felt they were sailing dangerously close to the wind in terms of personal remarks in general about other members.
Anything aimed at me is buckie off a drunks back. I just dont bother responding to it which is a wonderfully easy thing to do.

I think Mirabella's post -- which boils down to the question "what is a troll, really?" -- is relevant.  On forums with strict rules about staying on-topic, the word troll can refer to anyone who tries to disrupt the normal flow of closely moderated discussions.  On forums with strict rules about language, a troll can be anyone who calls other members names or says unkind things.  On a forum with loosely defined rules like this one, what exactly constitutes trolling is a lot less clear.  At least a third of our regulars would be smacked with the troll label if they posted like they do here on certain other sites.

Alright, I think I'm seeing some of the stuff that bothered Mrs Figg in the Hobbit thread, but I still stand by what I said, even if this guy can be a little much.
