Things that are making you crabbit! [2]

A very complex issue. I think unfortunately some of the problems may never be solved. They just lay too deeply within all of us humans, whether we like to admit it or not.

Take for example love triangle murder/suicides. They're throughout all our art from the earliest of times. (There would certainly be no opera without them! ) Why do people kill the ones they love most, and themselves, and why are we fascinated to watch???? Anybody who could do this is capable of ANYTHING!!! Yet we somehow seem to accept it in art, and even see it as romantic.

I agree that both isolation (because of the detachment), and lack of isolation (because of increasing pressure) are a major factors. I think they're actually very closely related. I know that the loneliest places in the world for me are big cities where millions of people walk by you, never saying "hi" or making eye contact, especially to somebody who isn't of their group. It always feels dehumanizing to me as an outsider.

But I'd also like to suggest that romance plays a major part in these monstrous events. If a person becomes depressed with their life and is ready to die, it's unfortunately not really so crazy to want to go out with drama and romance, like a suicide bomber or mass murderer, is it?

This sort of thing makes me crabbit. Someone in Ohio (appropriately enough) buys the prop of the shuttlecraft from the original Star Trek and after five years it looks like this:

Fortunately it has been bought by a Brit at auction for a whopping £45,000 ($69,827) who plans to restore it.

Re-entries are hard on the paint!

Let's hope it makes the Atlantic journey safely. Any word on what the new owner plans to do with the prop?

I'll admit to being a little bit jealous but it is a very cool story.

from a restorers point of view I should imagine that it was a paint or spray job and not done with car industry paints which are meant to last years under intense conditions. Without doubt the prop was not meant to last in eternity, so in the heat sun and humidity the paint would quickly peel off and become friable. so dont be too hard on the owner it was probably deteriorating from day one.

The trailer looks pretty badly neglected too, though. I'm guessing it was working when it came there.
I wonder if the doors and engine pods are lost, or in a pile somewhere.

Very good, Petty! The old man is Capt. Bill Larson. He was captain of Lady Washington in 1993-4 (not the owner though) and had been taking the Lady W down the coast from Washington state to California with the intention of sailing her to Hawaii, when the Hollywood location scouts saw her and made an offer we couldn't refuse. Everybody in a red waistcoat is actual Lady W crew.

I've been sailing with her for quite a few years as time permits and I've got quite a few stories (though not all of them fit for print.) So as you're the winner Petty, I'll give you a choice: would you like a good old fashioned "So there we were. No shit. True story!" sea story? Or would you prefer something a little tamer but with warmer sheets, more on the line of what Ally was referring to? It's up to you!

Whichever story has more sex in it of course!

Well the best sex stories are not mine to tell. Like the time that the porno filming crew showed up onboard on the pretense of doing a modeling shoot, and began behaving most improperly So we had to ask them politely to leave. We have an educational mission that isn't really compatible with such things. They later played the same trick on HMS Bounty replica and it became the #1 best selling porno tape for a while (simply called "Pirates") But that's a different story.

But shipboard romance is another thing. There are two ships in the organization that sail together up and down the West Coast during the school year teaching maritime history to about 20,000 school kids. We often make the front page of the newspapers and the evening news when we come into port, and there will often be fans (sometimes hundreds) and even groupies waiting for us when we sail in. Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom have done a lot for the love lives of the LW crew! Traveling with the ships is the closest thing to the life of a rock star that I will probably ever see!

The crew of about 15 is usually is split roughly 50/50 men and women, mostly 18 to 30 and serving contracts from anywhere from 2 weeks to 9 months. Since we're rarely in any port more than a week or two, people's social life tend to either be with the locals (which is very short lived) or partnering within the crew, which can have its own issues. There is a lot of romance and passion that arises naturally out of the location and lifestyle that can be wonderfully supportive, or can be absolute hell with no place to hide, and of course all your crewmates know everything! Imagine having an ugly breakup in a very public place, then having to work and live with your ex 24/7 as he/she starts dating your best friend.

Because I like to keep drama in my life to a minimum I usually try to stay aloof of such things. But a few years ago there were two ladies on the crew, best friends and excellent sailors both, who made it clear that they thought I was being completely unreasonable. Indeed it soon became clear that the competition between them for my favor was becoming so fierce that it would probably destroy their friendship and the morale of the entire ship if one of them didn't prevail.

Well I ask you, what could I do? In a moment of weakness I went drinking with one of them and....well...things happened (wild and noisy things I'm told! It's a very small ship... )

Think about a square rigger and use your imagination. I'm afraid that's all a gentleman can say.....
