If you have to hand it in to the professor in his/her office, sure. But most assignments are turned in during class. Online ones are a different creature but the deadline is often around the end of working hours.

Most of my professors have an expectation that I will actually spend three hours a week in the classroom, listening and sometimes even participating and are prepared to penalize people who don't. :/

The cool ones didn't but they're few and far between.

all my lectures are optional which means a mish mash of people come to each one
