Re: Quantum Physics
hi, someone wanna help me do my physics homework?
Stars are called element-factories ok.
Which elements are made by the starts on the "main-stripe" on the HR-diagram? And what elements are made i red giants and supergiants? And how are elements heavier than iron made? oh and how does supernovas influence on what elements a star consists of? And what's a pulsar, like called the univers' beacon, and why is it called that? And if i press the sun (our sun) into a tiny enough area it will become a black hole, but what's the sun's radius then? But ofcourse the sun can never become a black hole, too small. Not enough mass.

Re: Quantum Physics
Um I wouldnt rely on this as I am largely going on knowledge gleaned from ST!
But I believe a pulsar is a star that rotates and puts out a blast of radiation in one direction as it turns- like a lighthouse light.

Well I would advise asking Halfwise or Kafria or Dave, or in fact anyone else except Odo before me.
But perhaps doing your own research first would be the best idea. Then you can run your findings before the members on here whose brains have yet to encounter buckie.

Sorry, I haven't taken a physics class in something like six years.
Don't pretty much all elements come from stars though? Maybe? Fuck if I know.

Re: Quantum Physics
I got curious and just learned that elements heavier than iron come from supernovas (supernovae).

Yeah, reading the book is good. You've got to figure some smart dude took a lot of trouble figuring out the easiest way to explain exactly these things to you. You don't want to hurt his feelings by just dissing all his hard work do you?
When you've given it a fair try and can ask more specific questions I can probably either help you or confuse you more. Just remember that it can go either way, like throwing the dice. I'm giving you fair warning!

Re: Quantum Physics
As a humble but devoted stargazer (humble means that I don't know if everything I'm telling you is entirely true; devoted means that nevertheless I hope it is true) I can tell you what stuck in my mind after nearly a decade of watching the stars (and reading lots of books about astronomy):
you could say a pulsar is a hyperactive dead star...
mmmmhh let's see if I can xplain it more precisely...
After a supernova the star - well, the part of the star which hasn't been blown off into space - continues to rotate. It is now a very solid orb, which draws it's energy mainly from it's own rotational energy. Don't know how long it keeps doing that... Probably we simply haven't found a pulsar which has stopped rotating.
But it probably can't stop because it has been doing this for thousands and thousands of years - no matter how much mass it has got. I mean, the whole galaxy is rotating - Imagine what would happen if it suddenly stopped... How could it even (be) stop(ped)?
Oh, forgive me for talking like that - my imagination is running wild
As for your other questions:
I don't believe that you could measure the sun's radius anymore, if it had become a black hole. Time and space don't follow the laws of physics - which we know - in a black hole anymore.
Can't answer the other stuff

Re: Quantum Physics
Isn't there an event horizon surrounds a black hole- a point of no return as it were- could that not be measured?

Yes! That might be possible!Pettytyrant101 wrote:Isn't there an event horizon surrounds a black hole- a point of no return as it were- could that not be measured?
If I remember correctly there's even a formula for the calculation of the event horizon.
But this wouldn't be the radius of the black hole strictly speaking, because the event horizon is way beyond the "borders" of the hole.

As has been answered, all elements up to iron are made by fusion in normal stars. This is because the 'strong' force that holds protons and neutrons together in the nucleus only extends about 2.5 nucleons in each direction, and if you make a sphere that big you get the atomic weight of iron. Below this size every nucleon is pulling on every other nucleon via the strong force. Anything lower than that, the strong force sucks in more protons/neutrons once you push them close enough together (pushing against electric repulsion). The reason you've got neutrons in there is to help dilute the electric repulsion, but too many and you begin to dilute the strong force. Usually you have roughly equal numbers of protons and neutrons because if you get a lot of neutrons the nucleus can decrease the total energy by decaying into a proton and electron: less total mass.
Yellow mainly fuse hydrogen into helium - red I believe (but look it up, I'm too lazy) fuse helium into heavier elements, and blue giants are putting even heavier elements into things up to iron.
You can push things together to make something bigger than iron, but you don't gain energy that way. that's why it takes a supernova to give up energy slamming things together: it's got energy to spare.
If you know how to calculate escape velocity at any height (set potential equal to kinetic energies) you can get the location of the event horizon by working out where the escape velocity is equal to the speed of light. For the sun that's smaller than the radius of a neutron star that would be formed if all protons and neutrons were skrontched together, so you don't get a black hole.
