Re: Quantum Physics
Modern cosmologists are often (but not always) looking at some version of grand unified quantum models when they make broad statements like that. I'd have to actually see the episode to know what he was up to. You wouldn't happen to know what it was so I could look it up would you?

Oh good, path integrals! I hope you go into Wiener processes, if only for the double entendres.

Actually I hope to use as little Martian as possible; I think double entendres in foreign languages just hack people off 'cause they know they're missing something.

Re: Quantum Physics
I was thinking more along a storyline connection involving bucky-goggles.

Re: Quantum Physics
About bucky-googles or expanding fluids?
If the second one, I think they are double sided walls: the fluid is poured in between the walls, and the volumes are arrange to all be the same. So the tall glass has less thickness between the walls but more area = same volume.
That explains the small to the big pours. Going back there may have been a break where they turned off the camera and filled up the inside of the larger glass.

Re: Quantum Physics
Glue a small glass inside a big glass. If the big glass is all mottled on the outside you won't see the small glass. Pour the milk in between the two and it looks like you are filling up the large glass when in fact you are only filling up the space in between. If you have several of these of different sizes you can arrange to have the volume between the large and small glasses be constant, so the same amount of milk seems to fill each one up, small to large.
After you've filled up the outer volume of the large glass, turn off the camera and fill up the inner volume, then turn it back on. Now you can distribute the milk among all the smaller glasses because you have a larger volume of milk. you can actually see the blink in the video when the camera was turned off.

And in fact at the end if you look closely you can see the inner glass in the large glass!

Re: Quantum Physics
It's not quantum physics, but it's pretty cool!
And a little farther down...
My question is, if we're thinking of waves moving through the medium of space-time in ways that can be measured by an interferometer, haven't we just made a big circle and come right back to where we were 100 years ago with Luminiferous ether?
http://io9.com/5963263/how-nasa-will-build-its-very-first-warp-driveHow NASA might build its very first warp drive
George Dvorsky
A few months ago, physicist Harold White stunned the aeronautics world when he announced that he and his team at NASA had begun work on the development of a faster-than-light warp drive. His proposed design, an ingenious re-imagining of an Alcubierre Drive, may eventually result in an engine that can transport a spacecraft to the nearest star in a matter of weeks — and all without violating Einstein's law of relativity. We contacted White at NASA and asked him to explain how this real life warp drive could actually work.
And a little farther down...
"We're utilizing a modified Michelson-Morley interferometer — that allows us to measure microscopic perturbations in space time," he said.

I didnt understand a word of it, but warp drives. If they have found out how to make one, thats the best invention of the 21st century, or any century.

The only way I can think of responding to that question is to say that locally you can't measure motion relative to space-time, only in comparison to warps in space-time.

Congratulations Norc! Now try to hang on to the ideas and look at the formulas from time to time in a practical context. Interesting things are accelerating around you all the time!

I'm don't understand in this context though. The trouble I'm having is in measuring a potentially faster-than-light effect with an optical sensor. There are a lot of apparent paradoxes in faster-than-light travel that have been used to show that it's impossible (at least for undergraduates). This seems to require that they all be reexamined. But I'm trying not to speak Martian.
So let's say that the USS Enterprise is approaching Earth in a warp field at Warp 2. What happens to the light in the field? Can an observer on Earth see it? If so, what does it look like? If not, how can you measure the effect? Does Eel Oil help? How about Buckie?
This isn't an idle question you know. I'm thinking about the next Carrot Ship.

Buckie always helps no matter the problem. True fact.

Re: Quantum Physics
I should have thought the space ship would be invisible to people on earth, as our little peepers can't see very fast stuff. Unless you put eel oil on your glasses which could catch all the wibbly wobbly incandescant stuff coming off the ship as it tears through the atmosstuff and makes it billowy and fluid like a kilt being nuked..

hehe, yes. I am still waiting for the results of another test too and I feel really good about it (probably jinxed it now)...
