Re: Happy Birthday Lorient
I accidentaly ended up watching Game of Thrones with my mom.. We were both equally surprised and I just slowly and diskret left the room and went to bed. awkward!
Re: Happy Birthday Lorient
yes I hate it when that happens.
Orwell I tried reading Game of Thrones thinking it was up my street what with the Medieval/fantasy thing, and I got past the first two chapters then gave up, its not that its not good, because it is very well done, its just too thick and stodgy its like a heavy venison pie, maybe I wasnt in the mood for heavy stuff, you need to give it your full attention or its a waste of time. I prefer HBO.

Read The Portrait/Haddon Hall instead! It's gots thrones, the supernatural, current issues, no explicit violence and the romance is all rated G!
(Now if that does not establish a new low for self advertizing I'd be very surprised and I am very ashamed. )

Nah, not even close. We've got Orwell, remember?

Re: Happy Birthday Lorient
The whole Song of Ice and Fire series is dangerously addictive because Martin is not afraid to be cruel to his best characters. There's always mystery about what will happen next due to this complete lack of scruples. And he's a very good, very creative writer that creates very real world; the comparisons to Tolkien are apt in this regard.
But you'll never get that uplifting feeling produced by Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien deals with the deepest themes with what seems quite a light and simple approach. Then you get these books that take their seriousness too seriously, and appeal (no doubt) to readers who take them themselves too seriously. I found Stephen Donaldson dull and listless, self-absorbed and 'intelligent'. Martin sounds a bit the same.

Re: Happy Birthday Lorient
Is that what you told Anon, Orwell? Is that why he won't write more about Annabel and the cat and evil little people who killed everybody?

Not sure I see the connection... but one is rarely one's best analyst.

I agree Donaldson is dull and listless. Couldn't make it through the first 3 pages. Martin is nothing like that - I think the problem people have with him is too much story, not thematically guided like Tolkien. Martin lets his characters do as they will. But it's oddly compelling, to me at least. He does have an overarching story (winter is coming, Daenerys is slowly acquiring almost mystical power), but it's story, not theme. That's where he and Tolkien part ways.

Re: Happy Birthday Lorient
If enough folk were interested in Annabel, I guess I could ask old Anon Author....
