Third one is supernatural, the demon hunting winchester brothers that I harp on about now and then,
-- and yes, I'm telling you why I am not watching classic who!

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
Hunky Americans ripping their shirts off (i bet they do-all the time) being supernatural should be no substitute for an old man in a magic box from a time when sex was never mentioned!! You should probably be ashamed or something you know.

Probably, but I'm not!
(Actually, the fact that spn has involved a battle against angels, links with blink came naturally. Then the 'when a good man goes to war' ties nicely with the idea of the righteous man, and also the last season when the renegade angel claimed to be the new god. - then you gotta guess sherlock would solve the double puzzles of the doctor and the existance of the supernatural!)

Still you have to admire the technical skills sometimes- I'll not look at Liv Tylers Arwen and Blanchets Galadriel in quite the same way again!

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
Why, hello Eldo... I didn't know you ever came here..
Petty, I've watched 'The Ambush" and discovered several insights. Two particularly come to mind.
(1) Like hates Unlike. This explains why the handsome, tall, intelligent Bankses hate the squat, attractive (in their own way), intelligent (in their own way) Scotshobbits.
(2) Also the Thals will die out eventually because, for all that their women are hot hot hot, their men are clearly Gay - and pacifists to boot.
I also have a question. That Dalek (Dal?) who got extracted from his machine... well... with his machine now destroyed, will he die...?

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
Must say, the episodes burst with ideas (even if things seem a little corny now). It must have been an exciting time making those early episodes. And I must say while the Doctor seems interested in things he's a bit disassociated from people and emotions. Life forms are ínteresting specimens, it seems. Typical scientist! He is fond of his Grand Daughter, of course.

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
Not sure where you in them Orwell so hard to avoid spoilers and iscuss. But yeah in the Daleks story alone you have genetics, nuclear war, mutation, pacifism versus war, bio-mechanisation and a few other ideas chucked in there. Not bad for a kids show.
I quite like the Doctors disconnect with people, its actually something he still has which is why he is loneliest man in the universe too.

Virginia Wetherell! Hot hot hot! She was in A Clockwork Orange. Nice picture...
You know, I was a bit worried how they were going to defeat the almost indestructable Daleks. But they did! And not one raygun in sight!
Now for last Saturday night's episodes!

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
- Spoiler:
- I think what I like best about those two episodes is all the strange behaviour, the paranoia, its just them. There is no alien influence, there is no presence in the ship, its all a mix of partial memory loss, paranoia and each person inate personality (the Doctor's being quite harsh- in fact I think he even shocks himself a bit hence the apologies at the end to Barbera). Its also the first hint an episode that would be later built on immensely that a TARDIS is more than just a mechanical machine.
In later Who (much later) we discover he didn't know much about TARDIS's and was never trained to fly one-as it requires a psychic link that usually starts when the Time Lord is still a child (the wonderfully named Time-Tots!) he just nicked one (or was nicked by it).
Sadly we now hit the first of the lost episodes- the entire next tale, the six episode Marco Polo is gone, missing entirely.

Re: Classic Who for Discussion
- Spoiler:
- I really liked both. The Daleks was full of ideas - in a modern version there would have probably been less ideas but stretched over more screen time, I reckon. Swamp mutants, treks through tunnels, on top of all that other sci/fi stuff you mentioned. I thought it quite funny that they snuck in the back way, having lost two men on the way, but who is the first person they meet? Yes, the Leader of the Thal, who had snuck in the front way! Loved the Thal attire - especially the gals. Ooowee! Also, the almost indestructible Daleks were dealt with so simply. Actually, I don't think the writers developed their indestructibleness until later. In fact, the Daleks were not mobile or particularly dangerous if you could dodge them, just Dals in a Machine. Though they were still scary! I actually think this was good. Almost-indestructible creatures don't do it for me (like most Dark Lords and Super Heroes). I like my evil on a human pragmatic scale. The Doctor is an ambivalent character, a bit of a brainy dope too. And I love the way the characters do their facial expressions when saying something... err... íntelligent' or 'insightful'. That's kind of cool too. Shakespearan? And there was a bit of sexual tension/romance between Barabara and that Thal. Oooweee... Actually, for 1963, I thought the show quite 'modern'. No doubt, full of cutting edge ideas.
The 2nd Dr Who was good in that it had fewer ideas, but the idea of the Tardis being tricked because of a simple spring was kind of brilliant. That would never happen in an American show. I noticed on a blog that "Ian got to have a bit of a grope" of Susan. But as she was twenty, it was okay... I must go back and look again. I think I know what the blogger was getting at, but I don't think you could really call it a 'grope'. Not by Ozhobbit standards anyhow. Anyhow, shows that you can make a very inexpensive show but still be really interesting.
