Roverandom is an extraordinary story about a young, black and white, little dog that one day is transformed into a toy dog after biting a wizards trousers.
It was a terribly stupid idea, but Rover didn’t know better, and if he did, none of these astonishing events would ever have happened to little Rover.
He would never have met the super fast seagull Mew, Psamathos, Uin the oldest of all whales, the Man-in-the-Moon or the moon-dog, or ever experienced what it was like to be chased by a dragon or fly,
or even swim in the under-sea gardens of the Merking’s palace. And he would never have met little boy Two.
 
The story, or should we call it a tale, begins a perfectly normal, summer-day in Rover’s garden. An old lady has just bought him and the pup plays happily with his yellow ball, when an old man comes wandering up the garden-path towards Rover’s garden.
The man is Artaxerxes, a wizard from Persia who got lost and now lives in Pershore.
He picks up the ball, thinking of turning it into an orange or even a piece of meat for Rover. But Rover, being a young and hasty little dog, barks and says to the wizard:
“Put it down!” without adding a polite ‘please’.
Artaxerxes, now a little annoyed by the dog’s impolite approached, puts the ball in his pocket and turns away, just to tease little Rover. Rover immediately bites the wizard’s trousers.
The angry wizard at once turns him into a toy dog and sends him off to a toyshop.
Rover soon finds out that he only can move a tiny bit when no ones looking and that his barks now are just toy-barks, which no one can hear.
The same day he is brought home and gifted as a present to a little boy. The boy, little boy Two as Rover calls him, immediately starts to adore his new little toy dog, and carries it with him wherever he goes. Rover is not very happy at all, all he is thinking of is how to escape so that he can find the wizard and ask him to turn him into a real dog again. But Rover, who now sadly is a toy and can’t move very much, understands that this could be a difficult plan.  
One morning little boy Two and his older brother decided to run along the beach and brought little toy Rover with them.
The little toy dog gets lost on the beach, so finally Rover managed to escape.
On the beach, buried in the sand, he meets Psamathos, the head of all Psamathists. A sea-sorcerer. He understands Rover’s problem and tries to fix it, but he can only make him a real dog, but still in toy-size.
On Psamathos order the seagull Mew carries Rover on his back, and flies on the moon-path (the path of moonlight on the sea) and takes him to the Man-in-the-Moon, the greatest wizard of all.  
But the Man-in-the-Moon can’t help Rover and says only the wizard who transformed him in the first place, can change him back. On the moon he meats the moon dog also called Rover.
To avoid confusion the Man-in-the-Moon gives our Rover the name Roverandom. This is the start of the journey to find Artaxerxes. Roverandom travels to the white and the dark side of the moon, where dreams are made, and under the sea where the astonishing palace of the Merking lies.
Too great adventures lies ahead of him that the little dog can imagine.
 
J.R.R Tolkien wrote this story as a comfort to his son Michael, who had lost his beloved black-and-white toy dog in the sand near the house where they were spending their holiday.
Michael was nearly five, and their older son John was nearly eight while Christopher wasn’t one year old yet.
Tolkien and his family were enjoying an unexpected holiday, a celebration of Tolkien’s appointment as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford.
They had rented a cottage high upon a cliff overlooking the beach and the sea. As mention Michael had a black-and-white toy dog, which he dearly loved, he had it with him all the time. When he ate, slept, and played. He also brought it with him when Michael, John, and their father were walking along the beach.
In the excitement of the skimming waves, he left his little toy dog on the sand, and against the background of white shingle, the little toy dog became invisible.
It was after this holiday that the story of Roverandom was written down, but the exact year is uncertain, due to the fact that the story emerged in many different forms before it was published, or ready to be. The book as you see, was ready to be published in 1937 after the success of The Hobbit, but it wasn’t published until 1998, long after Tolkien’s death in 1973. Basically it is Tolkien’s youngest son, Christopher Tolkien who has published a lot of J.R.R Tolkien’s unfinished stories, based on his many notes. Though I do not know who finally took the initiative to publish Roverandom.
 
I really did love the book. It is such an exiting and fabulous story, which really touches your heart. It’s written in a true Tolkien manner. Like a tale. It starts with a ‘once upon a time’ and ends with an ‘The End’.
The settings are so well described and fantastically astonishing that it really make you want to read it all over and over again. It’s not a typical novel where you have a plot and climax; it’s more like a children’s story, which it is! Though it is a book for everyone.
Any person who reads this book will be amazed and enjoy it as much as I did. I recommend it especially to children and of course big Tolkien fans like myself.

it's not nearly as good .. i would never write something like that now.. too much. idk... too much.. i would've gone through it a couple of times... correcting shit, but i just can't be bothered.. it's old.

Me too. I'm always amazed that young people in foreign lands are writing entire book reports in foreign languages like English, while we are lucky to learn to count to ten and say hello/goodbye in another language.

I have never tried to learn uncivilised languages like Fjordianlandian or American, Halfy, but it's good to see young villagers from Skattykatzenfjord like Nora trying out English. And succeeding better than I can too, I must say. That Nora is a gem - not quite a carbuncle, yet - but surely a gem.
