A marine survey off Orkney has turned up a rather curious fish-like thing.



According to the BBC newspage- 'The rarely-seen species was regarded as a modern representative of the first animals that evolved a backbone, the Scottish government said. With a nerve cord down its back, the fish does not have a clearly defined face or brain.'

Another wild and windy night in Scotsdale- strange omens and lamentations on the air indeed! Power is just back on- been off all day till now. If wha just hit us is heading east (which it was) then buckle down the hatches in Skatasfjjordland cause that was pretty wild, even by recent wild standards. Lost another tree in my backgarden too and many, many roof slates this time.

They are expecting it to come and tear up some trees and stuff over here too. But it is south of my Grey Havens, we had a storm/hurricane last week. Power gone for two days (and that was short compared to others), mostly due to trees falling on the power lines. Lots of trees went down.

Yeah we got hit by that one to- dubbed Hurricane Bawbag here- a bawbag according to the deinition in the Urban dictionary is - 'the scrotum in broad scots, an arse hole or wanker/ not a good person.'- mises out the humours contotations of it though, its a delibretly comic sounding word (meaning it can also be used affectionetly, such as when a friend has made a mistake and you wish to convey sympathy but also the fact what they have done was bloody stupid, as in, 'Aw mate, you are such a bawbag.').

Front page of this mornings Scottish Sun has the huge headline - 'Badder than Bawbag'- got to admire a nation who will use humorous slang for the scrotum on their front pages as news headines!
I think the Scots mentality must be something close to that of the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail- we'll be destroyed by flood, earthquake and fire and there will still be a Scotsman somewhere shaking is head at the sky shouting "Whit that's aw yi've got is it? Call that devastation? That's barely a puddle and so whit its a bit breezy. That yer best? Come back here and try tae dae that again an A'll show yi."

The not so funny side to strong winds. The caravan park near me was hit pretty bad.

'A 35-year-old woman was last night in ­intensive care suffering from life-­threatening injuries.
A 30-year-old woman and a 57-year-old man were ­seriously wounded after scenes “like the Wizard of Oz”.
Emergency crews freed the victims at Stratheck Holiday Park, near Dunoon, Argyll, at about 8.30am.
All five were rushed to Dunoon Hospital and three were ­transferred to Paisley’s Royal ­Alexandra Hospital by a coastguard helicopter.
The injured man and 30-year-old woman were last night in a “stable condition”. Two other people suffered minor injuries.
Park owner Keith Campbell told of his shock that no one died.
He said: “This freak gust just lifted the caravans and sent them crashing. The wind lifted them out of the ground even through they are all tied down with wire attached to stakes one metre into the ground. “To think those people were sleeping in their beds when this happened is horrific. When I saw the damage to the caravans those poor people were in, I was surprised they came out alive. It is incredible.”




I am amazed they got a helicopter flying in those winds.
I also know the Park Owner- although not well, he was my boss many years ago. And those caravans are well tied down. High winds are not unusual although it was gusting at over 100mph and considerable higher in certain places where it was funneled.

A caravan is no place to be in a hurricane, even if it doesn't blow over or away you might get squashed by debris. Lucky people...
Seems the wind mostly avoided Norway and decided to visit Sweden and Denmark instead.

Holidaying in Scotland in January is a strange choice!

I'm glad to hear that nobody was killed, and I hope it stays that way! I didn't think hurricanes usually hit Northern Europe so all these storms are rather surprising to me.

Never used to be like this- used to be high winds were an occasional feature of january and Febuary- some years you go them some you didn't- and when you did it was once or twice, three times at the most- not seemingly constantly as it feels like this year. Its been getting steadily worse as global warming has gone on- less cold, less snow, more rain and high winds.
Rather worryingly a government official in the paper went of their way to explain that it was down to slar activity, it was a predicatable cycle, it had happened before, nothing to worry about.
Now if my reading of the Mayan end of the world thing is right the end is brought about by a particularly violent culmination of 12 yearly solar cycles, in what they called a Grand Cycle- is it just me or is this a bit worrying when combined with current weather patterns and the sun apparently being the source for them?

The weather has become more extreme. But it was not as bad as the New Years hurricane of 92.

And while I am concerned about solar flares and such and the effects of global warming, I am not at all worried about the Mayan calendar. It is the end of the 13 cycle, and the start of the 14th IIRC. And a Mayan god may return, cause 13 is a special number. The Mayan indians themselves are preparing for all the doomsday tourists that will come and are not at all worried. Even the ancient Mayans themselves mentioned dates long after this event, which is a strange thing do if think the world will be no more. But now I'm rambling.
