I honestly think this might be the worst -- or at least the most deplorable -- song I have ever heard, and for that I love it. I feel like my life is more complete for this experience.

Also, I've been laughing non-stop for the last 20 minutes.

And to think I remember when the Sex Pistols were offensive.

Don't you guys get MTV over there? He's just one of the guys from Jackass, they do shit like that all the time.

Sex Pistols are good, no doubt (for a certain definition of "good"), but for my generation, hearing about how people used to say they were offensive is sort of like hearing about how people thought Tim Burton's Batman was too dark.

Well Sid Vicious was offensive. But to me because of what happened to his girlfriend. But well nothing seems to matter anymore. but i cried at Patricia's voice. Baby Vuvu Hasia liked the baby so much and laughed and laughed. I questioned the audience , their age. But I loved the videos.
So glad you laughed for so long Eldo, it is very healing.

I think Pistols need ot be taken in historic context, punk wasnt just music, that was only one expression of it (it started as a fashion and social trend).
It was a reaction to the abject failure of the 60's and the Hippy movement.
Punk saw the idea of group consciousness as a failed dream, a delusion- all that mattered with individualism- what the 60's and the early 70's produced was a generation who thought all organisition and order was suspect and just as delusional as the hippy dream of peace through love. The world was chaotic and cruel not ordered and loving and that should be embraced not feared.
And the Pistols British twist on it was also a sense of a crumbling UK, the last death throws of the state of mind that had come with being the worlds biggest ever Empire- unemployment was massive in the 70's here, poverty rife, education poor- it all seemed to have fallen apart. Even the heroic stories of WW2 was subverted by punk- nazi uniorms and symbols became part of the fashion at the same time as the union jack did.
They struck at everything in the Uk from the monarchy down to their own audience who they would spit on.
It wasnt a manufactured music, it wasnt commercial (in the beginning) it was genuinely reactionary- that is why it had the effect it did- it hit its targets, hard.
And their message- from the point of view of society at large- that chaos should be used for your own ends so long as you come out of it with what you want- is a dangerous one for ordered society. Which is why the government and police took them so seriously.

This vids good as the music vid has a lot of news footage putting them in historical context.



leelee- Sid himself was a tragic soul, as much a victim as she was in the end. I highly recoomend the biopic Sid and Nancy. With Gary Oldham superb as Sid.

That makes for interesting reading, thanks Petty. The Sex Pistols and their role in music history are definitely fascinating, though I've always been curious to know more about the role of their manager, Malcolm McLaren. My understanding is that he formed the band, and he seemed to be a very clever publicist. Playing "God Save the Queen" on a boat in the Thames on the Queen's Jubilee struck me as both incredibly ballsy and a stroke of pure marketing genius.

Yeah Machiavellian Malcolm!! A fascinating man indeed. But how much of his manipulations are true and how much is him rewriting history is a hotly argued matter amongst those who were involved.

The film Great Rock n Roll Swindle is basically Mclarens mythologizing of his own role in the history of events. (NSFW)

I watched a few minutes of that and it looks really interesting; I'll come back to the rest of it tomorrow. I appreciate getting your perspective on it too. I need to sleep now though since I do have classes in the morning.

Night Eldo- I like that as a film- as a genuine documentray of the Pistols its a myth.

This is a very good documentary however if you only have time for one or the other I would recomend this one.

Any Fjordians seen a film called 'Sons of Norway'? About the impact of punk on a Norwegan family in the late 1970's.
Wondering if its any goods and worth tracking down.

I haven't seen it, but it's gotten great reviews by Birger Vestmo from
filmpolitiet, and I tend to agree with him when it comes to movies.

Oddly enough I have seen a few Fjordian films over the last few years- more than I have ever seen in all my life preceding that- and I have yet to see one I didnt enjoy.

Eldo- I know of Jackass, & some of their stuff was funny,some was darn right crude! but, they did or said what half the population are thinking? but not doing! That vid of yours just made me laugh as I saw it as a "mickey take", for all its crudities! Made "The bloodhound gang" look positively mild !
I never got into punk, my son has "found" Joan Jet" at mo, plus he likes "the misfits", Hes more diverse than I am purely cos hes got more time to sniff bands out. My ears are open to anything from Mozart to Dudstep ! (really like dudstep at mo)

what, you don't have facerapes in the US? it's like massively here. especially in school. One kid, like cool, listens to hip hop and rap and yeah, he left his facebook open and we went and like all there was to like about justin bieber and changed his background from like a hot lady to justin... it was awesome. he took it with humout ofc

Oh, that. Now that you mention it I have heard the term "facerape" before, though a lot of people I know consider it offensive which is probably why I'd forgotten about it. That's never happened to me though, presumably because my friends are more mature than that.

that sounds boring.. but ofcourse, you don't like write mean things or hate on people, you just like write weird statuses. like "I love the sound of cats pooping".
