Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Lots of damn fluff in the first 5 minutes but then the deep dive into themes is worth it. I never knew the name of the "weakness and redemption" theme. I never knew there were names for all various ring and hobbit themes. Can't stand how this guy pronounces place-names. Not one of them is right.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Well, he says Middle-earth alright.
Hol' up! "Lothorien"? "Saw-ron"?
Well, then he says Isengard fine, and Mordor and such. A little harsh to say that he pronounces nothing quite right.
Anyway, I skipped the first five minutes, and I think it's a pretty neat video. I like especially hearing what the different instruments are.
I remember someone on here didn't like leit-motif, but I think it's great stuff.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Well he gets the obvious ones right. But he's tripping over his feet in eagerness to mangle Osgiliath, Cirith Ungol, and even as you point out Lothlorien.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Sadly, this guys voice irritates me a tad but, I do love the music to these films a lot.

Yes, he needs lessons in elocution.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
I don't mind his voice or elocution, just his pronunciation of half the names.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
Ah, but pronunciation is part of elocution. Integral, even.
I don't mean to nitpick though.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
If somebody is intentionally pronouncing something wrong, it's not elocution, it's not even a mistake. Don't get clarity of pronunciation mixed up with incorrect pronunciation.

Since this thread is reactivated I may as well take the opportunity to respond to Forest's questions with an example.
Let's say you have only read the word "elite" but never brought it up in conversation. When you do, you pronounce it "ee-light", producing much mirth. This is not an elocution problem, it's simply a mistake of pronunciation. Poor elocution is when you know how a word should sound, but do not produce it with clarity or in a way that projects. Come to think of it, I think there's a tendency to mistake 'enunciation' (which is elocution) with 'pronunciation'.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
for someone who loves poetry as much as he does, he's not a very stirring performer. Not horrible by any means, but what runs through my head is better. I don't know if I could get the version in my head to come out properly though; it's a question of enunciation.

Re: Tolkiens Songs and Music
I do like hearing Tolkien speak and he does remind me of when I was an itsy bitsy teeny weeny chicken poxy witchy kiddie we would listen to voices from the radio that all spoke as he did Cant help it, have to say it, as its his own work maybe a bit of oomph wouldnt go amiss ? And now I hear the chipmonks reciting it in my head
