Re: Tolkiens unseen Hobbit art
I saw a couple of preview pictures online, but I haven't bought the new collection. I'd be interested in getting either it or J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator, though. I've always thought it remarkable that Tolkien was such a talented visual artist as well as a writer.
Re: Tolkiens unseen Hobbit art
Hmm... without even seeing the new book I would recommend JRRT Artist and Illustrator over it, for perhaps obvious reasons: that it will be more diverse and yet contain artwork related to Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings.
I agree that Tolkien was a talented artist, although figures were not his strong point perhaps.

Re: Tolkiens unseen Hobbit art
I would not particulary agree Tolkien was a talented artist, an enthusastic amatuer who probably made his drawings out of a creative urge to visualise his own creations. But looking at his stuff with a critical eye, well some of it is copied (the eagle eyrie illustration being from a book) and Laketown, the Elven Kings Hall and a few others all use the same basic perspective techniques taught in first year art, you can all but see his ruler lines.
He has a certain style that his own, when he's not copying from another source, and some of it is effective but from a technical stand point its also quite basic.

Chris, this artist is wonderful! Not Alan Lee, not Hildebrant Brothers, but something else. Detailed, rich, evocative. Very cool. How did you find this?

I like Tolkien's line, and I kind of disgree that it is basic. ok, it is, but I like that the lines are simple and the water colours. makes me think maybe I could do something like that
