Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Yavanna! Hello!! How is Manwe doing up in his little hermit hole in the mountain?
You have passed through the first gate (wood was it?) with this thread. Petty man's the last gate (adamant? Can't remember my Gondolinian gates right now) and he is a right bastard when it comes to letting people through. He doesn't know how people keep getting in though.... Figgy has her own little door round the back which is how the rest of us got in!!
That may not make any sense at all right now... but if you put up with us long enough I am sure you will understand what that all meant.
Enjoy!
(BTW - do you play an instrument of any sort?)

I wonder who'll fit into the Most Liberal and Most Pure categories this year, it seems to change from year to year Maybe we'll just scratch them both and call them Least Crabbit and Most Crabbit

No! No! No! Ringdrotten
Pure and Liberal refer purely to Tokien and PJ- crabbit encapsulates all of life
There will be a thread appearing shortly for the initial category proposing part of the process.
So keep an eye out for it.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Oops, my bad on not following the etiquette. I had missed the first post, somehow. I suppose I was just distracted looking for the right Dr. Who gif.
How did you first come across Tolkien?
Growing up my parents were given the boxed sets of (I believe) the BBC dramatized versions of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I've listened to both of them on and off since I was about 6. In 2002, it must have been, my niece (she's a year younger than myself) brought over a cassette of The Fellowship, after which the upcoming LOTR films occupied a good chunk of all my thoughts and energy. I read both of Tolkien's main works shortly after having watched the first film.
What do you think of the movies?
The LOTR trilogy is amongst my favourites of all time. Conversely, I am here mainly on account of absolutely needing somewhere to express my "crabbit" concerning AUJ.
How did you pick your username?
It's actually my first and middle names. (Nothing to do with Ents). My mother named me after my dads tree-planting work (he planted over a million saplings in his time).
How did you find Forumshire?
I heard about Forumshire on TOR.C actually, someone mentioned it in passing, positively that is!
Speaking of -Orcs, My dad's side of the family are actually directly descended from Norwegian immigrants, so it was fun to find out Norc was from there.
Unless I'm mistaken, he must be 4th generation, I'm not sure. My mother's side is also mostly Scandinavian, but leaning a bit more towards Swedish with the odd French and English addition here and there.
I hope that doesn't annoy anyone, my mentioning family history like it's particularly meaningful. Apparently some Europeans enjoy their distance from America and dislike acknowledging any shared history (or so I've heard).
I for one care not for such petty individuals. I mean, where I grew up in Southeastern Minnesota Norwegian flags decorated many people's houses, and I remember having lefse and even trying some lutefisk once (I didn't much care for it, to be honest). And certainly we celebrated Syttende Mai.
Heck, it wasn't all that long ago that the Decorah Posten (a local Norwegian-language paper) stopped printing.
Well anyway, thanks again Forum for being so welcoming.
P.S.
My dad actually has a couple big trunks full of copies of the Posten and other such publications from as far back as the 1880s; it's fun stuff to look through (although I must admit he is the only one that can really decipher any of it; the font and language are too much for me).

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Strangely my initial introduction to Tolkien was thanks to an American. They first lent me a copy of fellowship- which I read several times before returning, it was a revelation to me, and then it was a painfully long time before I finally got the other two to read.
"Apparently some Europeans enjoy their distance from America and dislike acknowledging any shared history (or so I've heard)."
I dont know anyone who seriously thinks like that, in the UK we tend to refer to Americans as our 'cousins',but that doesnt mean we dont mind teasing them (me especially I must admit) and occasionally pointing out when invading other peoples countries might seem like a bad idea or why having universal health care is actually really, really good and quite civilised compared to treating people based on bank balance.
Not sure how the Fjordians will react to your Swedish revelation, still could be worse, you could have had Danish heritage!

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
WHAT! are u serious! this is soo cool!! omg!!!! did u know there are more descendants of norwegian in america than there are norwegians :Pi am so intrigued by this, we just had about the emigration in history and it is just so cool to actually meet somone could you perhaps show us this newspaper, it would be so cool :Dand also, you are most welcome on the kaffistova thread (coffee house) for us norwegians to discuss lefse and lutefisk ^^ also, if u haven't noticed, it's not just me :)Amarië and Rindrotten is also from this glorious country
http://www.hobbitmovieforum.com/t321-fjordlandia-viking-bar-kaffistove-main-str-221b-needlehole?highlight=needlehole
also, most europeans, at least Norwegians, find it very funny with americans and foreigners in general, especially if they have heard of us and as Petty says, it could've been worse, you could have had some danish in u O_O, sweden is our sweet brother Söta bror they let us have some independence and was the main reason we took hold of ourself and became independent in 1905 i could give u a full essay on that, but maybe not here

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Really cool to hear about how you celebrate your Norwegian heritage, Forest Like Norc said, I'm from Norway too. My nick is actually the Norwegian translation of The Lord of the Rings (Ringdrotten means "The Ring Lord" or "The Ring King"). Out of curiosity, does the show "Alt for Norge" ("Everything for Norway") air in the US? It's a reality show about Americans who descended from Norwegians, and as the weeks go by they compete in all sorts of stuff relating to Norwegian culture and history. It's quite fun as it doesn't have the bitterness and enmity between the contestants usually found in reality shows, but instead there is pure joy and excitement over being in the country they feel such strong ties with. It's a great show, but I'm guessing it doesn't reach a big enough audience to air in the US.
PS: You'll be better of sticking to the Norwegian side of your family, those Swedes are a shady bunch

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Hello everyone!
Read quite a lot on this and some other forums around the time that the first Hobbit movie came out. This forum struck me as a bit different and you seem to have a real good tone going around here, so I've been looking in every now and then for updates and news about the movies. Been reading a bit more lately so thought I might as well try to contribute something to the conversation.

Well thank you for that welcome. I'm deeply flattered!
I don't know half of you half as well as I would have liked and I don't like..... Well maybe not that last part.
But thank you again.

Hiya Bluebottle!
We've got all types here, all we ask is you have a mind of your own or you'll never sort through all the contrasting opinions.

Hi bluebottle. Nice little bilbo line there.... well, most of it.
Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Well, thank you all again.
Lance; Hehe. Yeah, it's a wonderfully written line, but I allways feel a little afraid about offending people with the second half. It is after all a little ambiguous.
