Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Hello. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and finally mustered up the courage to register.
How did you first come across Tolkien?
In sixth grade a classmate gave an extremely vague oral report on The Hobbit. Let's just say that at the end of the report I still didn't know what a hobbit was. So I read the book myself. I read LOTR right after and finished right before the first film was released.
What do you think of the movies?
I was captivated by the LOTR films when they were first released. Now I view them as pretty good films and OK adaptations, but not something that I find myself coming back to frequently.
I liked TH: AUJ, at first. Returning to Middle-earth on the big screen was a nostalgic experience. But then I thought about the films, and came to the realization that in terms of an adaptation it was just not good. From there I moved on to noticing all the filmic problems (pacing, tonal inconsistency, odd camera shots that feel off, not-so-good dialogue, the overuse of the cliched orange/blue contrast, etc.), this probably came with being eleven years older and A LOT more cynical.
How did you pick your username?
I don't know. It's Bilbo's dad! Why not?
How did you find Forumshire?
Spent some time on the TORN forum, didn't like the atmosphere, and, to be totally blunt, a lot of the users got on my nerves. Tried out the barrowdowns forum, but there's not much activity there. I lurked over at "Bree" for a while and saw someone mention this site, so I googled it.
So, here I am! Ta-da!

Thank you for the welcome, David and Mrs Figg!
That is fantastic! Let's just say I was bothered one too many times by a certain forum celebrity, so I just stopped posting. But now and then I will lurk to watch the occasional drama play out.Mrs Figg wrote: hi Bungo nice to see you here. Hallo Bungo!
Oh we've got our own dramas, but we always kiss and make up. If only there was something new going on with the movies to talk about...

Oh, yes. I think that I appreciate the lull in between films; come December 13 there's just gonna be an explosion of posts. Now it's just mostly speculation (along with some things we do know) and back-and-forth about the same topics.halfwise wrote:Oh we've got our own dramas, but we always kiss and make up. That's what happens when you spend too much time on reddit.Eldorion wrote:Hi bungo, welcome to Forumshire! I'm glad to see that you've brought some GIFs along with you. Very Happy

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Hello Bungo. Somehow I thought you'd look older --- or have you got some remarkable joolree I'd like to throttle you and wear... err borrow?
Please Note: We have some Rules here (apparently) and so I best warn you that they're here to be broken - but I don't mean our Unwritten Rules which are set in concrete (that's Unwrittten Concrete).
The most topical Unwritten Rule at the moment being: The Great Orwell (me, that is), only apologises if I want to, and I hardly never want to. The rest here apologise for various reasons. I don't usually find a reason to apologise - or at least, no reason that I can be persuaded about. Oh yes - I'm always right most of the time. That goes without saying. And, btw, the rumour that I'm a old pompous obnoxious ridiculous egomaniac with too much Odd and very little Id is only partially true. (Btw, I think that Rule is now Written, methinks. )
Welcome.
{{{NB Don't upset our Admin, Eldo - he may say you're 'dumb' and do this --- -- which is hardly respectable, what. }}}

In fairness to Norc that was probably wise {{{You know how our wonderful Queen Tinuviel can get a bit, tetchy, when others claim the title Queen- and Huan does get very hungry }}}
