Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
How did you first come across Tolkien?
I read my mom's little boxed set, that had LOTR & the Hobbit in it, back in the '70s. I read The Hobbit when I was about 9, & LOTR when I was 11. Didn't read The Silmarillion until I was in college, though. Own all of the HoME, but haven't read through all of them yet.
What do you think of the movies?
I liked LOTR very much, especially the extended version; overall, I think a very good job was done translating it from a book to a movie. The Hobbit, I just watched the 1st movie this afternoon - a few things I'd have changed, but overall, I liked it & am looking forward to seeing where it goes.
How did you pick your username? Does it have any meaning? Based on a pet

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Welcome to Foprumshire Karak!
To answer your quetions- I havent seen TH yet but I have a very low opinion of the LotR's films. Good where it stuck to Tolkien and appaling elsewhere.
My username is from a book but I use it to give peple a hint as to how seriously to take my opinions.
And if you visit Creative Corner and read the stories in the Dark Planet Challenge Thread you will find out, in a variety of ways, how many of us found ourselves in Forumshire.
Again, welcome and I hope you stay.

Hi Karakehribar, welcome to Forumshire! "Interesting" is certainly oen way to describe us, hopefully that's a positive. It's nice to meet upi and I hope you'll stick around.
Out of curiosity, have you seen The Hobbit yet? We've been waiting for so long that we sometimes drift off into other topics but now that it's here I for one am incredibly excited.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Yes, went to see it yesterday afternoon - HFR, 3D - and, overall, I liked it. Not like LOTR, but then, it's a different kind of story.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
So I had to look up the Savannah monitor. Smaug fits. But what kind of beast deserved the name 'Karakehribar' or something similar? Or what language? It's a pretty mind boggling name in English.
btw, just hang around for the next few hours. You are about to witness what is technically referred to as a "crabbit explosion" once Petty is wheeled out of the theatre on whatever derrick they have him strapped to. I'd put on protective gear.

Re: Welcome and Introductions (Newbies, Please)
Karakehribar means "black amber" or "jet" in Turkish - I had an Anatolian Shepherd named that - basic breed info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatolian_Shepherd
Very interesting reading others' impressions of the movie - I think most are either going to be entertained, or incensed. There's parts I wasn't thrilled with, but others that were spot on, & you can't translate a book into a movie without changes. Bits that I thought were rather overdone, my kids loved.
