Artisitc Merits

{{ Another week another sketch, made a mess of the foreground but I kind of like the tree and the Oxfordishireesque fields. }}

Spent a day or two in Oxford, but never got a good glimpse of the fields. Did see a lot of hedgerows blocking my exit off the road when on foot.

{{ This weeks is in two flavours - original pencil sketch and the 'Ive still got fifteen minutes and a few coloured pencils lets colour it in' version. }}

them colors brighten things right up.

{{ I ran out of time, so it's unfinished, the houses and stuff are still pencil alongside a few other details, and it really was a scribble in the colour like a kids colouring book to get that much done in the time, but it's all good practise. }}

From my FAR more limited drawing experience, the real test is if you can draw faces that are recognizable; even better if you can draw your own face in a way that doesn't make you run for the barf bucket.

My avatar is the closest I've come to a likeness I can stand to look at...

{{ I can draw faces that are recognisable, but I don't think they are good just recognisable, landscapes are definitely my preferred subject.
Unfortunately I can't post any to demonstrate as that would require the drawing of a person and their photo to compare, which I can't do without permission.
As to a self portrait, well I generally provoke a visceral response, somewhere between horror and cat dislodging a furball, well right before their eyes start to water uncontrollably when the alcohol fumes hit them. So I am not sure the world is ready for, or has any desire for a portrait of me, although I suppose if I did it in the style of Heironymus Boch and embedded the paper with buckie, it might approach the real effect of seeing me for the first time. }}

You can draw famous people.

{{ This weeks doodle, slightly interesting this one, well to me, in that I did it on my breaks, so took about 35-40mins, but then every time I saw it after that it was bugging me, here is what I'd drawn-



but then with 5 mins to end of my shift I had got so annoyed I grabbed a pencil and added a quick crude fence and for me, job done, works much better-

So I figured if you felt free to spend 5 minutes mucking around with your own masterpiece, I may as well see what I can bring to the table.

both those pictures are great. lots of little halfys bunking off before bedtime. I can hear them laughing like a dogs chew toy
I like yours Petty as they are so natural. You kinda feel that there is a real place just like that out there, which I find comforting.

The fence did the trick. It added depth and grounded it.
I think it completes a zigzag move from the mountains. The eye is confused because the line ends in the curvy road and the area in front doesn't seem to fit. But adding the fence leads the eye and completes the motion.

But my favorite is of course the one with the frolicking Halfies. Perfection.

The fence and mountains sort of complete a frame. The first one feels a bit open ended on the front.

I really really like this one, its very atmospheric.

{{ Thanks Az, its my personal favourite out of the work sketches I've done this year, but I've learned over the years that normally means I'm the only one! I am apparently a terrible judge of my own work, as the pieces people usually like most are my least favourite, and the few I will allow myself a tiny sliver of feeling almost slightly happy with, everyone else hates. So it's nice to have someone like the one I also like for a change. }}

Id like to see that pic coloured very gently, not harsh colours but sort of ethereal, as it has an outer worldly kind of feel, its tempting you but gently tempting you, your wondering if you should or not...

By the Power of Buckie, I compel you!    I'd totally ruin it now, however if I were to do a colour version, and I may, I think I'd have to try a painted version of it, it wouldn't work I don't think in coloured pencil, especially not on top of the normal pencil. Graphite is not easy to work over, and it has a sort of shiny surface to it that comes through everything. }}

water colours might work ? just touch it lightly.

{{ As fine a line of Hags as I've ever seen Az I'd be tempted to try a watercolour wash Az, but not amedium I have alot of experience in using, and I'd hate to screw up one of the few skeetche I'm vaguely happy with so far this year.

Yeah the atmospherics do help a lot Halfy (and save a section of paper where I don't have to draw anything! ) }}
