On my former post about 12 and the question of what does it mean to be the Doctor, it should be noted that Moffat also gives us a terrifying glimpse into who he is when he is not trying to be the Doctor-

DOCTOR: Fix this. Fix it now.
ASHILDR: It, it's not possible. I can't.
DOCTOR: Yes, it is, you can, and you will, or this street will be over. I'll show you and all your funny little friends to the whole laughing world. I'll bring UNIT, I'll bring the Zygons. Give me a minute, I'll bring the Daleks and the Cybermen. You will save Clara, and you will do it now, or I will rain hell on you for the rest of time.
ASHILDR: You can't.
DOCTOR: I can do whatever the hell I like. You've read the stories. You know who I am. And in all of that time, did you ever hear anything about anyone who stopped me?
ASHILDR: I know the Doctor. The Doctor would never...
DOCTOR: The Doctor is no longer here! You are stuck with me. And I will end you, and everything you love.


And thats who the Time Lord is when not the Doctor, thats the danger that always lurks beneath the quirks and the laughs and the front of the Doctor. It these glimpses of the seething rage and anger and pain beneath that make the character of the Doctor so fascinating and enduring. The Doctor is only ever two heart beats away from being the worst thing imaginable. Pity Chibnall hasnt understood or given us a glimpse of any of that.
And that parting- and great job from Masie Williams, she does scared shitless well lol }}

I like Eccy's take on that as well, mostly chirpy chappie, but also very dangerous when he needs to be. Whittacker doesnt do dangerous, its looks silly.

{{ Yup RTD understood that there has to be that element of uncertainty about the Doctor, that you think you know how they will act but sometimes the fury of the Timelord gets out instead of the Doctor, and he is neither nice nor good, as he says to Clara after she has been put, successfully into his shoes for an adventure, and is trying to get him to admit she did good, "Clara, you were an exceptional Doctor. Goodness had nothing to do with it."





11 is the same, these glimpses and hints of whats beneath, beautifully summed up in A Good Man Goes to War in the following exchange when 11 loses it for the first time and whats beneath his happy-go-lucky Doctor exterior shines through- }}

11- Look, I'm angry now, that's new. I'm really not sure what's going to happen now.

11- Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many.

{{ More I discuss Flux with folk I know, worse it gets. The ep with Yaz, Dan and Jericho globe-trotting I complained in my review that the entire plot hunting, find the date mission they are on is simply abandoned and forgotten soon as they get to comedy guru who tells them to 'fetch their dog'- they spend the rest of this episode going to the Great Wall of China and painting a massive message on the ground there to Kavanesta, who somehow can still see it in the future, from space.  But as the episode ends there, and was so much awful in the next episode too I hadnt noticed, until a friend just pointed it out to me that the 'fetch the dog' is also utterly pointless too as they get to the future through Williamson's tunnels, the message does nothing and is not acted on and has no bearing on events. Its just a random pointless thing that happens. And which means EVERYTHING they do that episode, which is nearly half the episode has no meaning or purpose whatsoever. The entire thing is just empty busy work. Why? The series was cut from 10 to 6 episodes thanks to Covid and they waste an entire episode on this nothingness. It beggars belief.}}

Its just a version of running down corridors to fill up time. They tried to make it seem as if there was significance to things which just stopped or fizzled out, like the dog thing. its very amateur.

My problem with modern art is that this same joke can be done with so much of it.

Most of it is garbage. I still cant believe Jeff Koons is one of the the richest artists. Damian Hurst is another one, its all garbage. Maggie Hambling making the most butt ugly statues the world has ever seen, yet she is given free rein. Emperors new clothes.

Saw an exhibit in the Smithsonian that had an empty aquarium with two basketballs in it. Lord only knows how much they paid for it. Far as I'm concerned if there's no craft involved, it's not art.

I agree. Somebody telling me that two basketballs in a fish tank is art, is not going to cut it. its a piss take is what it is.

Apparently you need to redefine your life as art. Unbelievable what performance artists get away with and get paid for it to boot! I think your barrel would be a prime candidate for some sort of national endowment.

Just dunk 'em in and out and call it post-post modern conceptual art. The concept being ball dunking as performative evocation of the Scottish lived experience. Or some such bollocks.

{{ Not for long Im afraid Halfy, as its Who news time!

RTD says he has already written some of the episodes for his return as showrunner and that they will begin airing in November 2023- the 60th anniversary year.
He also says they have only just started auditions for the new Doctor.

Breaking this down is quite interesting. If he has episodes plural written to start airing in Nov of that year then its possible either the anniversary will not be a single episode but a few, or that the anniversary episode will be the start of a series. This kind of makes sense- it'd be very hard to bring a new Doctor in with an anniversary special as their first episode. But if they have a few episodes introducing the new Doctor and the story leads into a big anniversary special that might make more sense.

That they havent cast the new Doctor yet is also intriguing, as far as we know Jodie has filmed her last scenes which means that either we are not getting an onscreen regeneration for the first time in NuWho and the new Doctor will appear fully formed as it were like Eccleston did, or that they will have to green screen it or something. }}

about time for some new blood.

November 2023. I want it sooner. But at least it's something to look forward to. Haven't had that in a while.
