Re: All New Who
{{ Credit where credit is due, I quite enjoyed that.
- Spoiler:
- Nothing spectacular but did everything it wanted to and did it all pretty well. Liked the Ice Warriors, liked their shades of grey as in classic, and liked the nod to classic at the end with Alpha Centuri- nice tie in and even the same actress doing the voice as in classic. I thought the secondary characters, though a bit cliched in some parts, were fleshed out just enough to make the stroy interesting and the sets and cgi looked good too for the most part (NASA building at start looked a bit weird for some reaosn, but Mars looked good). Overall a watchable entertaining slice of Who. Nothing spectacular, nothing wrong- what about that end bit with Missy- what is ging on there? Also am I the only one who got a weird uncomfortable chill at the sight of the Master at the TARDIS controls

Agreed, straight forward and generic but rather fun, one of Gatiss's better episodes, bit confused why the Tardis decided to play up randomly and separate Nardole from the others for no apparent reason (maybe Lucas was busy on other work in this episode and they had to write him out...)
Nothing wrong with a bit of campy throwaway fun from time to time.
As for that Capaldi/Missy scene at the end, I read a theory that
- Spoiler:
- MIssy can sense the Doctor is slowly regenerating, yet he hasn't realised yet...ie the blindless damaged him more than he let on and the fake out regeneration last week was stopped too late...

Re: All New Who
{{ Empress of Mars- the Brexit episode!
- Spoiler:
- Watching this one back was struck by the politics of it. The end of this episode has a nice cameo from Alpha Centauri. This ties this episode into the 3rd Doctor story Curse of Peladon. And Curse of Peladon was an allegory for the UK joining the then EEC.
So lets assume Gatiss deliberately continued this allegory. EEC is now the EU and Britain is not joining but leaving.
So what does Gatiss give us?- a bunch of Empire era Victorian soldiers whose own arrogance and blinkered view of themselves as "British" and therefore with inherent rights to do as they please leads to complete disaster.
Out of the surviving British soldiers the only one who comes out of it with any honour or decency is the man who renounces Empire and pledges allegiance to others.
Similarly the Ice Warriors start by resisting, then compromise, then eventually accept the facts of their situation and join the Galactic Empire, or space EU.
More crucially when the Colonel does renounce Empire he does so by saying not to judge us on the acts of one man who is motivated by self interest and by another motivated by cowardice.
Those are the two main charges you could put at the feet of Brexit voters- that they acted out of self-interest- millions saved for the NHS, tax cuts, trade deals- and out of cowardice- fear of the other, of immigrants, of terrorists.
I didn't comment on the politics of the monks trilogy as I thought they were pretty upfront and central to that story- but it seems series 10' s penchant for political undercurrents continues.

Re: All New Who
{{Its almost exactly the same show now. Main difference is in the change of format to longer episodes and less lengthy serialized stories.
Though from what is being said about Chibnall among the things he seems to want to bring to it is series arcs- more like Broadchurch. That and apparently he is committed to five years on Who.
Having an embedded narrative each series has its good and bad points but it does fit with the other things we know such as the plan for a writers room rather than individual writers penning their own stories. Again I can see good and bad to this.
He also seems to be hinting that he wants the show to appeal less to its core fan base and to have 'wider appeal'. Which probably translates as BBC Worldwide want to sell more merchandising. Again good and bad there too potentially.
So we might get something which has wider, broader appeal but is less hardcore Who and less risk-taking and adventurous with its format. More like RTd perhaps compete with young handsome quirky Doctor and love interest companion- though I really hope not.}}

Re: All New Who
{{Derek Jacobi is reprising his role as the War Master for BF.
'Sir Derek is now returning to the character in four brand new adventures, made by arrangement with BBC Worldwide, to be released in December.
Producer and Director Scott Handcock talked about the return
His incarnation is very much the ‘Hannibal Lecter’ of Time Lords – intelligent, charming, but thoroughly ruthless – we had a lot of fun in studio bringing the War Master back to life. It’s been a gift of a project, and we can’t wait for listeners to hear it!
Sir Derek said he was delighted to be playing the role once more
I didn’t expect to come back to it all these years later, but I was thrilled to be remembered. The plots in all these episodes have been very good indeed, very interesting, very dramatic, and beautifully written. The whole process has been a delight!
Doctor Who: The War Master Volume One follows the exploits of the Doctor’s arch-enemy during the course of the devastating Time War, featuring stories from acclaimed Doctor Who writers James Goss, Guy Adams and Nicholas Briggs – as well as new writing talent from Janine H Jones.'
Another one to add to the list!! }}

Re: All New Who
{{{Well its the end of an era certainly, but that happens in Who- the BBC are committed to at least another 5 years worth of Who which will mean its been back 17 years or something before they even seriously consider it its future. For now its not going anywhere. And change is as good as a rest they say and the show survives on change.
No matter which years of the show someone likes, or how bad the production levels might have got, or how indifferent the BBC might have got to it- even poorly made Who is still generally more ambitious, more adventurous and more imaginative than just about anything else on tv, ever. So whilst I have worries about the Chibnal era and what he might do to the format of the show and the basic underlying tenants of it, I am also warily optimistic that he will, at least short term, come up with a new fresh way to tell Who. Just as Moffat did when he began and RTD before him. }}}

Re: All New Who
My thoughts on eaters of the light:
- Spoiler:
- Whilst I thought it was quite a thin, generic story it was told pretty well (if that makes sense?) and was an enjoyable enough episode, though probably not one I'd care to revisit too often.
The cinematography and editing made quite use of the scenery, there were several amusing one liners (liked Nardole especially in this episode, some very interesting tales he was telling those picts, unseen adventures with the Doctor perhaps? hopefully Lucas has more screentime in the finale), and nicely pitched performances from the leads, really liked the design of the monster even if the stories resolution is a bit rushed.
I did think the episode was a tad overly talky, I'm not sure I buy Bill's sudden interest in Roman History (or the supposed age of the legionnaires, The oldest is supposedly 18 yet the actors look as old as Pearl Mackie who is her late 20's, are we just supposed to assume people looked older back then?) or the Doctors being fine with the three of them wondering around in modern clothing, the dialogue explaining Bill's sexuality came across as rather hamfisted and in your face (whilst her realization about the workings of the Charmeleon circuit came about six episodes too late i.m.o, did she just assume the Ice Warriors knew English?) and I'm not sure the epilogues with the kids on the hill was necessary.
Very intrigued to see whether Missy's regrets and apparent reformation is genuine, though I think I'd side with Nardole seems rather reckless to let her out of the vault.

Wouldn't be surprised if they have his Master cross paths with McGann's Doctor in one of the future time war sets (this would give them an excuse as to why the Doctor dosen't recognize the Master in Utopia...the 8th Doctor gets amnesia so often it's almost a recurring joke...).

Re: All New Who
{{Another reaosn to lament the sad demise of John Hurt- we could have otherwise been looking forward to the prospect of Time War era BF stories with Hurts Doctor v Jacobi's Master- that would have been something special indeed- two of the UKs most renowned actors of stage and screen playing in Who! Oh what could have been, life is so cruel.
Thoughts on Eater of Light-
Thoughts on Eater of Light-
- Spoiler:
- I enjoyed that. I didn't find it as talky as you seem to have Malick, it felt quite lyrical to me. Especially loved all the stuff around the crows. But I think it did show that she is more used these days to being a playwright not a tv writer.
I do agree Bills interest in Romans seemed to come out of nowhere- and oddly enough Amy too had an interest in Romans based on her school days - "'The Invasion of the Hot Italians', yeah I did get marked down for the title."
Also found it interesting that Munro choose to put the words of Calgacus, who was a Chieftain of the Picts who led an army against the Romans, into the mouth of the Gate Keeper girl.
If you're curious heres the original version as recorded by Tacitus-
'Whenever I consider the origin of this war and the necessities of our position, I have a sure confidence that this day, and this union of yours, will be the beginning of freedom to the whole of Britain. To all of us slavery is a thing unknown; there are no lands beyond us, and even the sea is not safe, menaced as we are by a Roman fleet. And thus in war and battle, in which the brave find glory, even the coward will find safety. Former contests, in which, with varying fortune, the Romans were resisted, still left in us a last hope of succour, inasmuch as being the most renowned nation of Britain, dwelling in the very heart of the country, and out of sight of the shores of the conquered, we could keep even our eyes unpolluted by the contagion of slavery. To us who dwell on the uttermost confines of the earth and of freedom, this remote sanctuary of Britain's glory has up to this time been a defence. Now, however, the furthest limits of Britain are thrown open, and the unknown always passes for the marvellous. But there are no tribes beyond us, nothing indeed but waves and rocks, and the yet more terrible Romans, from whose oppression escape is vainly sought by obedience and submission. Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of empire; they make a solitude and call it peace.'- Calgacus
Though she got that last bit wrong as in Munro's version she uses the mistranslated version of the last line- '"they make a desert and call it peace". Granted not many going ot notice that but irked me a little I have to say!
Apart from that though I enjoyed it, I thought Nardole was good mileage, the Doctor had some great lines full of humour and the continuing undercurrent of 12 and the Master is bubbling along nicely too. The cgi was good. Shame they shot in Wales not Scotland- given the BBC have studios all over the UK not sure why a trip north was out. But having said that it was still well shot and lit.
Cant believe we are heading into the finale already- only 3 more Capaldi episodes left and I am not at all ready for that. Not even close.

Re: All New Who
{{ Discovered this was on dailymotion.
An Adventure in Time and Space. Mark Gatiss' docudrama about Who's beginnings.
Even if you are not a Who fan this is just a great example of the genre. In my view quiet easily the best thing Gatiss has written Who related and probably the best thing of his I have ever seen.
When he writes like this you can see why he keeps getting work. Also a great cast to back up the words.
Well worth anyone's time, and space, enjoy. }}}

Re: All New Who
only watched two episodes, was this season ok? it seems a bit meh from the things I saw online. I think the best aspect was Bill, she seems quite popular.

Re: All New Who
{{{ It seems quit popular and well received. Don't think an episode has scored an average below 8 on Gallifrey base this series.
Personally only episode I thought didn't work well was Lie of the Land.
I have found this series a bit straightforward, lacking in complexity and depth normally associated with Moffat era. It seems to have broader appeal but its less interesting because of it, for me anyway.
But then we are about to get three Moffat penned episodes in a row to finish things off. So that will probably change. }}}

Re: All New Who
Watched the first 10 minutes or so of the docudrama. Quite nice. Had no idea the first producer was a woman...very progressive thinking, may have been crucial to success.

Re: All New Who
{{{ The whole drama is excellent and full of period details. And Who's beginnings are just a great story to tell in themselves.
It wasn't just the first female producer at the BBC it was also shot by its first Indian director, Waris Hussein, too. }}}}

Re: All New Who
I've only watched uptil 'lie of the land' so far, but even that one fitted into the RTD era feel of things with it's... different-ness...
I like Bill and I love Nardole. Watch it for Nardole.
