Inside a torus!
That's the shape that you get when when you rotate a circle around a co-planer axis. It's an incredibly important mathematical "shape" in Topology, but please don't ask me to explain why right now

Re: Just...................whatever
The shape Petty posted is called a torus, Mrs Figg.
Think about it as the skin of a doughnut, and you're standing inside the circular tunnel.
It's constructed geometrically by drawing a circle and a straight line alongside it. Now think in 3D and make the circle orbit like a planet around the line.
It will sweep out a torus just like this.

Gee Dave, I have to admire your restraint in not off handedly tossing out that a donut and a coffee cup are topologically equivalent. It's the typical mathematician's morning-after breakfast comment that keeps 'em single.

{{{Wait, when you said some women were 'into' it, you were talking about monomorphs? }}}
So Mrs Figg, do you wanna hear the one about the doughnut and the coffee mug?
Edit: just found the picture!

Re: Just...................whatever
Use your artistic eye and try not to worry about what it's for, at least for now. Imagine you're watching a glass blower or a maker of balloon animals. Think about the artist's and craftsman's eye necessary to see one shape and understand that it can be turned into another.
Now imagine that somebody wanted to put a seamless graphic design onto the mug. It might be hard to figure out how all the lines would come together, right? Much easier to draw onto the doughnut.
So why not draw the pattern onto the doughnut and when you've got something you like, only then 'bend' it into a mug? All the lines will still connect seamlessly and it will look really cool! Glassblowers do exactly this when they stick different coloured blobs of molten glass together in spirals and sunbursts, then blow it into a ball and shape it into a vase.
In the late 19th and 20th century, mathematicians figured out sets of rules for how to do this with almost anything, including formulas (imagine graphs being bent around like balloon animals.)
When you read mathematics on the written page it doesn't convey the beauty of it all. The beauty is in your mind, like a musician looking at dots on a page and hearing a ethereal symphony.
Does that make the doughnut/mug make a little more sense, or just make it worse?

Re: Just...................whatever
I'm no techno geek, and I'm left handed too, but what I'd do is open the photobucket picture, right-click and hit "copy image" , then open whatever program you use to edit your cool pictures, right-click again and hit "paste". Then it's on your computer again and you just need to save it into whatever file it belongs in. I hope that helps more than my explanation of the cup.....
