Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Okay... 4th time trying as Google Chrome is fucking stupid and keeps crashing.
Hopefully I will get a couple of pictures on here eventually.
Theme this year was future air power.... so lots of fast jets. Also, quite a lot of the same type but the differing weather meant differing displays as they went between flat, rolling and full variations.

First, F16's from the Polish, Belgian, Greek and Turkish air arms. Lots of good paint jobs!
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Cool. So that's in England or Belgium?

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Another front line jet displayed by the Italians, British and Spanish air forces with an additional display by the manufacturer. That is the one with the full load out under the wings. Also notice the static versions from ze Germans!
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
First display team, this one from Figgy's neck of the woods, the Italian display team Frece Tricolori
While the display team are good, special mention always goes to the commentator who is very entertaining. His last year this year so hopefully they find someone as fun.

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
RAF display of the mighty Chinook. I should take a video of this one day so you can see how they throw it around and to hear the 'blade slap' between the 2 rotor blades.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Quick trip to the static display section
Tornado GR4
Greek F4 Phantom
Swedish SaaB Gripen
Pakistani and RAF C-130 Hercules
U.S F-15 Eagle
Australian transport aircraft... only beaten by distance travelled by New Zealand. Special mention to Japan for their contributions.

Back to fast jets and what one of the stars, the USAF F-22 Raptor. One of 2 planes that truly looks like the next generation of aircraft. Looks a beast and flies like one too!

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Couple of the Dutch Apache, unusually not painted up in tiger colours.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Only heavy in the display and impressive as ever. A400M, displayed by the manufacturer and static from the German airforce.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
The big draw this year was the European debut of the F-35 lightning. Below is the F35B which is the short take off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant that will operate from the U.Ks 2 new aircraft carriers and various other air arms such as the US Marines.
Anyone who knows the harrier jump jet, this is the 21st century version of that.

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Special fly past which was due to include a vintage P51 Mustang, however weather meant that couldn't fly.
The F22 from earlier with an F35A model... this one cant do the jump jet shenanigans but has other advantages like longer range, bigger possible weapons load etc.

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Back to props... but the odd one out. V-22 Osprey which can act like a helicopter or a plane by rotating its blades.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Good role demo from the French Ramex Delta display team with the Mirage 2000 aircraft. This is their last year.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Nice noisy display from the F/A-18 Hornet. I believe a US Navy version displayed by the manufacturer.
Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2016
Final picture from the set piece of the display. Red Arrows with a Eurofighter Typhoon and F35 Lightning.
Hope you enjoyed!

Why was one of the F35s flying with the cockpit hatch open?

Hi halfy.
No, the top and bottom open up when it goes in to hover to keep the engine cool. You can see the same bits open in the picture of it on the ground.

Thanks!
The Typhoon has been in service for a long time now. They were more expensive than the government told us at first... but then isn't everything.
