eurovision song contest 2016
we didn't make it to the final but.. but here's a thread for those closet-eurovision-fans (like me)..
Re: eurovision song contest 2016
I'm always amazed by people who can sing in harmony with themselves.

Liked the Italian girl, mostly because I love the language and any woman singing in Italian will do it for me The rest made me want to drink, which explains tonight's consumption.

Re: eurovision song contest 2016
I haven't listened to a single song, but I'd still really want Australia to win. (It would be the ultimate irony.)

That wouldn't be irony, that would be the ultimate 'gosh we so love how you lot are fans!!"
The irony is Russia being a huuge favorite an Ukraine winning!!

Nah, that's not irony, that's predestination.

Re: eurovision song contest 2016
Wait, I thought Australia's appearance last year was a special one-off cause of the anniversary? Are they being considered a regular member nation now? Very cool if so.
Anyway, congrats Ukraine!
Anyway, congrats Ukraine!
Re: eurovision song contest 2016

Re: eurovision song contest 2016
{{Anyone watch this years Eurovision? I actually saw it all for the first time in years with my better half and was surprised to find that the quality this year was surprisingly high in general. I liked quite a few performances- I wasn't the biggest fan of the Israel winning song (it was t least original and Erotypical quirky- but still dont know what Israel is doing there at all- is it for the sake of German guilt? And why are Australia in it- honorary UK criminals still? What's going on?!!). So a few decent songs this year- Germany was ok, and the Vikings were pretty fun, and I liked Italy's sentiment to their song and not just because my life depended on it!
But the song that impressed me most personally, both as a bit of singing and visually was Estonia- if Tolkien's elves had invented electricity they'd have used it to make dresses like these!! }}

found it at the bottom of this: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/5796937/estonia-eurovision-song-contest-2018-entry-elina-nechayeva-la-forza/
It reminded me a bit of the diva scene in the Fifth Element, but not as exciting. In fact I'd say the dress was far more exciting than the rather bland music.

Re: eurovision song contest 2016
This was the 1st year I didn't watch Eurovision. My daughter comes over, we have an abundance of snacks etc & have fun guessing who's gonna win & all that but, not this year. I found the winning song batty, didn't understand it but, looked like a song that didn't make the "Chicken Run" film. As for Miss Tonsillitis there Petty she certainly dislodged any stubborn earwax I had

There are more fans in Australia than in Europe... Eurovision needs us to keep the goatcart rolling.... assuming it’s still goatcart music still - yes, yes, with an 80’s touch, I know!

So you're saying you guys who aren't even in Europe are responsible for the continued existence of ESC?

{{ Its a bit of European institution, its in its 63rd year and the original Italian competition its based on is even older.
Generally in the UK its been seen more as a bit of a joke than a serious competition- partly because for a long time the UK had a pretty derisory view of 'europop'- the UK basking in the glory of being home to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Queen ect we tended to see this competition as a sort of 'oh look that's sweet, they're trying to do pop music'.
But its been taken a bit more seriously in recent years and the standard of the competition itself has been improving.
I have some issues with it still- I think you should have to sing in your own language- I find it disappointing when watching each countries song to find half of them being sung in English.
The voting has got better- it just used to be a panel of judges in each country made up of leading musicians and producers from each country- they still have that but ow there is an equally important public vote (without which this years would not have won for example) which borrows form modern reality tv vote ins.
Oh and one thing I love is a call back to the old days of television and the difficulties of getting tv connections to every country in Europe- when each country gives its results they still say "Lisbon calling," or London calling' or wherever- its oddly archaic in modern tv and for some reason endearing.
Found you some singing Vikings Halfy- and the Italian entry whose sentiment I liked (its in response to things like the Manchester arena bombing and other terrorist attacks and its sentiment is basically 'screw you, you wont stop us'.
I've tried to find versions of the song that arent from the official Europage so you can see them in the US, so they might not be the actual on the night performance but from elsewhere) }}
{{Lot of songs with very strong or personal sentiments for the singer this year too}}
Italy's entry
Germany
{{{ And the winner- and the sort of song that for years helped maintain that patronising UK attitude to Eurovision of 'oh look they are trying! }}}
