Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I liked that opening sequence in the church. It's a great start to the film I thought, especially to help set up the main character's background.

{{{Indeed- amazing they saw fit to cut it from the theatrical, especially as it serves in my view several purposes.
Character set up as you say, also
Character set up as you say, also
- Spoiler:
- the content of that particular ceremony serves as a counterpoint to the islanders own sacrificial ceremony.
Also the shot of him readng the Bible verse at the podium is angled to include in the background a burial crypt within the church (the skull and crossbones thing behind him) which within Churches in Scotland are usually bones of someone religiously significant, saints, martyrs ect, this being almost the first shot of Howie in the film links thematically to Lord Summerisles words to Howie at the very end- 'believing what you do, we confer upon you a rare gift these days - a martyr's death. You will not only have life eternal but you will sit with the saints among the elect.' And the stance he has at the lectern when readng the Bible verse is mirrored later in the islands school when he addresses the pupils right after the, too him shocking line from the teacher about the Maypole, that it represents 'as venerated in religions such as ours'- actually the look on his face when she says that is one of my favourite moments in the whole film, its so perfectly pitched.
So yeah as opening scenes go, for something so simple and seemingly so straightforward it sets a lot up thematically for what is to come and its conclusion, and in a very short space of time.

Watched Hail Caeser on DVD recently. My anticipation was high; the comic delivery was limp. Sometimes I feel the same people who cut the trailers should go back and recut the whole movie: the trailers are often so much better than the movie.

I did not, but I did notice that Lord... Mayfield or whatever straight up sends in a randy young fellow for Willow while the main character is watching. I don't recall that being in the version I watched.

- Spoiler:
- Howies rather tortuous relationship with the idea of sex, him being a virgin who for religious reasons is saving himself for the marriage bed.
And it shows that he can and does have the faith to resist temptation, hell he doesn't even knock a quick one out, just tightens his watch strap that bit more and covers his head in the bed and tries not to think about it.
Mind you its nothing to the restraint he shows the following night when she is calling to him through the wall with Willows Song whilst slapping her naked body against everything- now that's restraint!

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
{{
- Spoiler:
- I think what I love most about the religious themes is that you can view it for all sorts of angles, as a viewer.
If you take a Christian standpoint Howie is not an idiot, he is a hero. A man who resists all temptations and refuses to renounce his God faith, even in the face of appalling circumstances.
On the other-hand from the pagan side of it it makes perfect sense to them, they believe in reincarnation, that he will come back as an abundance of crops and plant life, making the land fruitful again- a beautiful gift from their point of view worthy of celebration. And in its faith and belief it's no different from Howie's, or his acceptance of sacrifice in the chapel of the flesh of Christ.
And if you take a rationalist standpoint they are equally insane, and each follows their own insane logic to its obvious conclusions.
In the case of Howie, he is the beetle in the school desk, the one that's tied by a thread to a nail and 'goes round and round, always the same way you see, until its stuck right up tight to the nail, poor wee thing'- Howies beliefs his faith means his actions in the circumstances they present him with can only lead him one way.
And its their own understanding of faith which allows them to successfully stalk his behaviours and predict his patterns, based on his strength of faith. and ironically that ibn turn only confirms and embeds the certainty he is the right man for them.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
I think that's an excellent analysis.
- Spoiler:
- I think predestination/fate is another theme that's looked at from a couple religious angles and adds to the creepiness of the outcome. A question though, suppose that Howie had "failed" the purity tests. Do you think he'd have escaped his fate, or simply been less worthy of it?

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
{{{Yes the whole issue of fate and pre-destiny is interwoven into it.
- Spoiler:
- Is he doomed from the start or do his own actions doom him? Which leads into your question what if he had failed.
I suspect their plan was reasonably flexible in that he could probably fail once and be a less worthy sacrifice, but still because of his faith better than any available alternative (and there is a deadline of Mayday).
I think had he fallen to far below being an acceptable sacrifice they may well have burnt the girl instead. Summerisle says at the end that a 'child is better, but not nearly as effective as the right sort of adult.'
Presumably therefore had he proved to be not the right sort of person they would have used the girl, something that may be hinted at when her mother, with a great deal of conviction tells Howie '"You will never understand the true nature of sacrifice."

- Spoiler:
- That makes sense.
The "willingness clause" was the other out I think Howie had. If he'd not so 'cleverly' donned the costume and joined in the festivities willingly, my feeling was that he'd have absolutely disqualified himself.
Though he'd still have probably disappeared I guess. What do you think?

- Spoiler:
- Yes he had to do it willingly, of his own volition, it was his own self-righteousness that got him there.
As to letting him live if he had proved unsuitable, maybe if it was early enough on he had somehow proved the wrong choice- joined the party in the inn on the first night and shagged a local outside with everyone else, they might just have sent him packing in the morning.
But once he had been to the school the next day and had enough of concern to report back with he wasn't leaving no matter what.
Hell they are still finding old planes that went missing, not just in the sea but even on land up mountains, from decades ago around here- you got a whole island from children to adults to the Laird saying he never arrived it wouldn't be suspicious, a crash lost in the sea is more likely than island wide murder conspiracy.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [3]
{{In one of my hunts for old film gems I stumbled upon a 1947 film called 'It's a Joke, Son'. I have no idea if this is considered an American comedy classic, but it should be in my view if its not.
Its main character, Claghorn, is a loud mouthed Southern gentleman, ridiculously proud of everything Southern, and disdainful of everything from the North to the point of ridiculousness.
The plot concerns how he becomes a Senator, and draws in pretty much everything that was popular in 40's cinema, so there is a love story going on involving his teenage daughter and a man her mother disapproves of, but Claghorn quite likes, some, sort of, feminism in the form of Claghorns wife and her Womens Group (though that kind of goes the opposite way by the end!) some political satire, and cinema favourites of the day- gangsters. Hell they even throw in a performing dog.
In short the plot is pretty typical and pretty formulaic, appealing as it does to tropes of the period so blatantly.
So why do I think it should be a classic? the strength of the main character really, Senator Claghorn himself is simply a hugely enjoyable character, even my crabbit exterior smiled a lot watching this, and snorted buckie out my nose on more than one occasion and thats rare.
So its perhaps not surprising that the character of Senator Claghorn inspired Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn (though ridiculously the actor who created the character,Kenny Delmar, had to then get permission from WB to continue doing his Senator Claghorn act as they had copyrighted the character!).
The plot is really just a way to loosely link together a series of sketches and ideas, and it works effectively at that, it keeps everything moving forward whilst providing what you want- which is to see Claghorn in a variety of situations just to see how he will react to them.
So whilst I cant recommend it for anything it does thats exceptional for its time, it doesn't do anything new in regards to plot, form, or secondary characters, I can recommend it for the strength of its main character, the quality of the writing of the jokes and dialogue the vast majority of which hit their mark rather than miss, and the sheer exuberant fun it has with its materia and playing with wordsl. Its also very short, clocking it at just over 1 hour. But its an incredibly densely packed hour! }}}
{{I also recommend Foghorn Leghorn too- some great writing there too}}

You can see the similarity between Beauregarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd & Leghorn I like a lot of these old B/W films, the stories were good. (Cripes, couldnt his wife shriek !) Reminded me of our latter day Alf Garnet in some ways, he was a stick in the mud also

Interesting. I had no idea that Leghorn was inspired by a character from a film.

watched The Martian with Matt Damon and Sean Bean. how can you make a boring film about a man lost on Mars? well they managed it. had a little giggle when Sean Bean is in a NASA meeting and someone mentions the Council of Elrond. apart from that it was boring. the female lead had the charisma of a dead Geoduck.

I can see both similarities and differences between the two, a lot of them having to do with whether they're telling a story that's measured in hours or in months.
