Bungo I agree wholeheartedly with you. I detest the casual USA bashing you see on the internet. I have nothing but admiration for what I like to think of our American cousins. some people think they can mud sling without having a good look at their own society, or maybe they are under the immense delusion their own society is perfect, which is quite worrying.

It's like everything else; lolz and fails are popular, serious and sane is dull and snoooooore. People are lazy. If there's no cats or a "...what happened next blew my mind" attached people will skip right past.

Re: Just...................whatever [5]
Well in fairness to idiots its not hard to see where they are coming from and why.
When you have an incredibly power and influencial country who then claim American Exceptionalism and that they alone are exceptional in the world, its bound to put everyone elses back up.
When that same country then spends the better part of half a century pulling down democratically elected governments who dont favour US expansionism policies in other peoples countries, and replace them with American friendly, but insane dictators who collectively go on to kill, torture and rape hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people. And when they fund worlds worst terrorists started off a s US funded anti-Russian plan. You can kind of see where some folk are coming from and why they might be a tad upset with America- especially if you live in one of those countries that got a crazy Dictator kept in place with US dollars.

Re: Just...................whatever [5]
I can't argue against that, Petty. US covert ops from about 1950s onward have caused a lot of problems for us in the new millennium. And I'm thinking mostly about installing the Shah in Iran, funding Osama bin Laden to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, and installing more puppet dictators in South America. But if we're so bad and amoral, then people should stop coming to us when shit hits the fan elsewhere (of course, here I'm speaking of natural disasters, not problems caused by the CIA).
As far as "American exceptionalism" goes, that's mostly touted by the republican party in our country. Not everyone here believes in it. I don't think America is exceptional. Privileged, perhaps, but not exceptional. Some of us here, namely politicians, don't understand what kind of power and restraint needs to come with that privilege.

It only puts your back up if you are a nation with an inferiority complex. I doubt if the USA puts the back up of somewhere like Japan. as they have self confidence and don't need to compare themselves to anyone. I doubt that America sees itself as exceptional, rather with having the weight of duty on its shoulders to sort everyones shit out, not because they feel entitled but more being a hangover from WW2. I would argue that most people think their country is exceptional, but some like to bang on about it more than others.

We can include the UK and France in that. and its probably why Obama isn't keen to get involved any time soon with IS. too many people throwing hissy fits over past mistakes.

Haha, we had kind of like a butter shortage a couple of years ago at christmas when everyone wanted butter for their christmas cakes and cookies and so on. It created quite the media storm.

I doubt that America sees itself as exceptional- Figg
Its their phrase- 'American Exceptionalism' according to wiki-
'American exceptionalism is the theory that the United States is inherently different from other nations.....In recent years scholars from numerous disciplines, as well as politicians and commentators in the popular media, have debated the meaning and usefulness of the concept. Roberts and DeCuirci ask:
'Why has the myth of American exceptionalism, characterized by a belief in America’s highly distinctive features or unusual trajectory based in the abundance of its natural resources, its revolutionary origins and its protestant religious culture that anticipated God’s blessing of the nation—held such tremendous staying power, from its influence in popular culture to its critical role in foreign policy?'....The phrase became an issue of contention between presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain in the 2008 presidential campaign, with Republicans attacking Obama for allegedly not believing in it.'
