That's exactly the thing that will make me blub my fooking eyes out !!! I get far too emotional these days !!! Its lovely & heart warming but a blub fest in the making. Shows dogs & cats can get along !

It's interesting to see cats and dogs so clearly compared side-by-side.

First the mum takes some licking with her ears pinned back, then after some batting back and forth stalks off and squats down to watch.  The dog licks all the kittens, who bat with their paws as the dog shows tummy.

Then mum comes back and shows tummy as they nip and bat at each other before saying goodbye.

I just wish the floor wasn't so gross.  They didn't seem to mind.

{{If a cat exposes its stomach to you don't be tempted to stoke its belly! Its not a dog! Its not an invitation to touch! But it is a gesture that they feel safe and secure enough in your presence to relax and they deliberately expose their soft unprotected belly area as a symbolic gesture of this. They also do it as a sign of ranking, if it rolls onto its back its indicating the other cat, dog in the vid above, is recognised as being higher up the chain.

Ears back has lots of different uses- can be a sign of hostility, straight flat back usually accompanied by hissing and a wary prancing of the front paws. But they also do it when they are excited, surprised by something and when it comes to cleaning mother cats are very vigorous with the ears, licking them flat back- in my own cats case both the mothers when they had kittens adopted the same ear cleaning technique- use one paw across the neck to pin the kitten down firmly and securely and lick the ears back and flat- they don't like it, but they endure it.
As adults my oldest cat Kiera used to occasionally still do it to her, adult by then, kitten as a continued reminder of who was boss- so its also another gesture and sign of positioning in the pack. They never seem to enjoy it, kitten or cat, but they do put up with it as they can't properly clean their own ears.

Tails are good communicators too- wriggling tale is either annoyance or excitement, when they hold it straight up, especially say when you come in through the door after being out its 'hello' and a friendly greeting like a wave, when they do that rub up against your leg thing they are scent marking you and reapplying scent to faded bits, marking you as theirs!



A tail straight up can also be a 'here I am' signal to other cats or owners in long grass. }}

When I'm introduced to a new cat for the first time and have been allowed to pet them, I'll often gently massage the tip of one ear between my fingers. If that's welcomed, I know we're going to get on well. I think this is related to the ear grooming hierarchy you're talking about.

{{No rule is going to be absolute for every cat Figg. But in general a mistake non-cat owners make when confronted with a friends cat who rolls over onto their side to expose their belly, is to reach out and give the belly a rub like a dog would like- this will most time result in the cat that at best leaping up and buggering off, or at worse clawing and biting of their hand.
This is totally justified from a cat perspective as right in the middle of the cat saying 'Hi I want to be friends' they go and totally unwarranted and unsolicited invade the cats personal space. }}}

When kittens show their belly I go straight for it: I love when all four little fuzzy limbs converge on my hand. But I don't usually try that with cats.

One of our cats loves having his belly rubbed but every other cat I've tried it with has started clawing or biting my hand within a few seconds.
