Re: Just...................whatever [4]
I saw something about swearing and its effect on children on one of these forums but could not find it.
I looked after children for the Ministry of Social Services and Human Resources, I went into the homes of children who had their parents removed and were under investigation I cared for children that were battered, abused and at risk
And in EVERY CASE bar none, I had the children confess to me in tears and in sometimes the fetal position, that SWEARING was to them just as dreadful and scary as actual beatings and not being cared for.
Swearing is ugly, demeaning, often a substitute for putting things into words in a better form of grammar. IT is meant to shock and demean for the most part, and it sounds supremely ugly to young ears. It makes the world around them ugly and threatening.
I have often heard adults say it never affected them and then the children with them say the same things, because they want to fit in, not be different and not be rejected. But privately to me, in our tea and talk times, they would ALWAYS, no matter how tough they acted , tell me they hated swearing, just hated it and wished their parents and guardians would not swear. I was stunned really when Hasia last year said she no longer wanted to be with her favorite uncle because he would not stop swearing. They did everything together, but she said the sound of it made her scared and it was ugly. So now we have a no swear household and if he does he has to leave the house and go to the jeep and do it. And she stopped having nightmares and settled down
Don't think for a moment it has not effect. And for those of you who say it did nothing, you probably had a parent or someone who made you feel secure so you could take it or leave it. Those who do not that I have worked with see swearing as a prelude to violence.
If I am in a room with swearing individuals I don't like them less or hurt their feelings, but I will leave as soon as I can; I want to converse with someone that uses proper language to talk to me, not someone who feels compelled to use the f word to fill in where another word cannot be imagined. I think swearing lowers us to the lowest common denominator, I wish for all of us to go up higher, I do not try to change their minds, they have the right to say whatever however they want. I am just saying I have seen enough pain and sorrow from words effect on children to last forever.

Thats probably because the swearing was apart of abusive language directed at them.
When I was growing up adults swore casually all the time, not aggressively, in fact often for humorous effect. There was nothing scary about it. It was just words. Part of the everyday background to life.
I was taught quickly enough with a clip round the ear when it was appropriate to swear and when not.

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Leelee. Nice to hear from you!!
Not nice to hear of the things you mention, however I do think that this is all caused by the taboo of the swear word. I have never understood that and the general premise of getting offended actually.
Swear words are only that because someone, somewhere at some point decided so. Calling someone a fucking prick is no more or less hurtful than calling someone stupid if both are meant to hurt. The choice of words is really irrelevant apart from because that person somewhere decided so. It is the intent that is the problem.
This is why the whole 'kick racism out' set of campaigns gets on my nerves. Being racist is not acceptable but it is no better or worse than talking about someones family, their weight or their taste in length of shorts of all are intended to offend.
I wont go on to my frustration with people being offended in general as that has no bearing here. My point is that we have so many double standards in life that dont make sense. A child being upset by swearing shouldnt happen... the upset by name calling and general aggressive behaviour will because children are small, generally defenceless and often dont have the mental capacity for understanding what is going on. That isnt limited to aggressive language though!

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
If swearing is being used to channel rage, I can see why kids would fear it.
Conversational "What the fookin' 'ell is up with the weather today?" isn't a problem, but swearing at a kid instead of explaining the problem and possible consequences means rationality is being cut out of the dialogue.

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Missed the swearing stuff since I didn't see this page until now.
I tend to agree that it's not the words themselves that make the difference as the meaning behind them. Speaking personally, I was plenty of afraid of both my parents whenever they got angry and started yelling (which was often) or worse, even though swearing was only sometimes involved. I suppose that when I was still 12 or under, before I started swearing myself, the swearing made it seem even worse, but that was probably because I knew my parents didn't swear at me except when they were angry.

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Ok, this will put me in the "go outside" camp but, I dont like swearing either, even tho I do say "fook" on here. I HATE anyone swearing in front of children ! I think its disgusting. I find it embarrassing, a child has to hear that ? I live near several schools & some of the mums walking along with such lovely kids & they are effing & jeffing & calling their kids "oy, you fucking little shit !" makes me feel sick ! I didnt swear in front of my kids, I didnt bring them up to swear,. Now they ARE grown up & over 18 they can do as they please & if they want to swear, get hammered or whatever, its up to them. But as Petty & Lance say, its the fierce aggression behind the words thats the issue. If swearing is said with such a vehement force, with blazing eyes & sneering mouth, it can shake you right up ! When my Ex ( may he rot in hell ) shouted the C word at me, amongst other names, like, slag etc, THAT hurt ME, so how does a child feel when the one person who you looked to, the one person who should love you, calls you a F-ing shit ?
Say it in a jokey way & it doesnt hurt, If you swear in a comical way within the bounds of fun the words actually fly over & you dont take as much notice. In fact you often join in on the joke. Ive known people who say they swore worse because of anger ( parents anger or whoever) than when its said for a laugh. I think its gotta be done in moderation tho. To much swearing then starts to sound gross. Some comedians can find the fine line with this, some cant.
And by the way.......... Hello Leelee !!!

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
I think its all in the context. I was brought up and taught swearing was wrong. My mother never swore- she always said 'sugar'' instead of 'shit' when she was angry My Dad and his friends on the other hand swore as a matter of course, not deliberately in front of us when we were very young, but after a few bevvies they just forgot, and they didn't swear violently, just very casually, every other word pretty much in fact! So if they were talking about anything it was just peppered with swearing.

Children are not so thick as all that. They pick up on when it's appropriate by copying their elders and siblings.

I think swearing can be funny, it can be aggressive, it can lighten a mood, it can hurt a child, it can deflate the pompous, it can do lots of things, its sometimes a blunt instrument, or it can have razor sharp precision. Some swear words are medieval some are ancient, some are beautiful in a horrible way. depends how you use them.

It can sometimes be hard to tell swearing from technical discussion if you're a farmer, and breeding and excrement are the core of your business model.
