Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Sorry, I didn't mean to bring the mood of the conversation down. It's just that most people who have family in Alaska have some kind of story like that. On the other hand, almost nobody is killed in automobile accidents. I guess you can take your pick..
If you've not been there, it's hard to grasp how big the wilderness is. The state of Alaska is the size of the UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy combined, but with only the total population of Lincolnshire (about 700,000) [I love wikipedia! ]
Here's a picture of the town where my mom grew up:
And here's the only way to get there if you don't want to fly:
It's a WONDERFUL place to explore, but if you don't know your way around you need to take a guide or you're going to get into trouble.
Edit: Just like driving in Italy, I understand.

I have often imagined Alaska to be a big, tree filled, beautiful place, plenty of wildlife etc, & with your great pics & descriptions,Dave, I dont feel let down. I get the feeling a grand place as Alaska is, deserves & commands deep respect.

Dave, I'm not sure I understand the advice to stay put in Alaska if lost. In a place that big, who can find you?
I'd follow a river downstream, more likely to run into settlements. But what do I know?

The trouble is that Alaska has only recently emerged from under glaciers, so most of the rivers haven't had time to carve valleys yet. So unless you know the river you're following really well, you're probably gonna be scrambling down terrain like this, burning thousands of calories you can't afford to replace, and in all probability breaking a few bones.
Also, you know the rainfall rates in the coastal zone. There's enough water to make a river every 5 miles. Most of them discharge in the middle of nowhere, 50 miles from the nearest abandoned hunting cabin.
So unless you know exactly where you're trying to get to and have a clear plan on how to get there, you're gonna do a lot better if you just find a place that's visible from the air with some kind of food and water. Then just put out some smoke and markings, try to stay warm, and hope somebody cares enough about you to send out the search planes.
Once you start moving around through that terrain, you become far smaller than a needle in a haystack. A plane flying over will never see you unless you've got some way of signaling.

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Norclet... There is someone on Britain's got Talent called Lettice (stupid bloody name) that plays violin. She is also a bit mental but I believe she is quite a good violin player... but not knowing about these things she could suck. Thought you might want to have a look yourself. Sure she must be on youtube by now.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Lettice Rowbotham?! that's even more ridiculous than Benedict Cumberbatch.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
well, she knows how to play, but i think she messes up the rythm a bit too much and.. everything sounds cooler with some effects (electric violin thing) because it sounds like a guitar and playing that on a guitar is hard, on a violin... not so much.. but that's her first audition, hope she has more. but yeah, good entertainer, definitely, and i think that's what these talent's show are about, not actual talent but entertainers.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
It is a stupid name. Some parents should be flayed for that kind of thing. She was in the live shows this week so may be some more of her.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
I liked what she was doing with the rhythm, especially where she broke free and sort of used the background track as, well...background. The electric violin is not really unique, she's just bringing it to an audience to whom it may sound unique.
I'd agree with Norc, not a genius performer based on what we've just seen, but an entertainer. She's cute and happy, which counts for a lot in an entertainer.
She should keep her first name, change her last name to 'Intertaineau'

Re: Just...................whatever [4]
i kinda love how posh she is well, i didn't like what she did with the rythm, and the last melody it's very false..... it more or less reminds me of a guitar solo, like show-what-you-can-do-on-the-instrument kinda thing.
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
Lettice is actually a Victorian name, it wasnt weird 100 years ago. strange how fashions change.

nah, Lettice is a ok name, although.. Rowbotham? together?? and said with a posh accent O_O
Re: Just...................whatever [4]
She didn't sound terribly posh. At least not to my ears. When she did the most, she was putting it on I think.

I don't think she was putting it on. Young, posh, eccentric people do just sound like that.
