Yeah, the recording is really awesome!!! Not as awesome as Neverwhere but still fantastic!
Yeah, I've always been a big Terry Pratchett fan, but for some reason I never got around to reading this. And then I saw this quote recently which made me think I should look it up. Perfect timing, really.
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-30512620Neil Gaiman wrote:Terry Pratchett and I met in February 1985, in a Chinese restaurant. I was a young journalist. He was a former journalist and Electricity Board PR, and a writer who had just published his second Discworld novel. I was the first journalist who had ever interviewed him.
I remember we made each other laugh a lot. We laughed at the same things. We became friends. It was easy.
In 1987 I wrote a book about Douglas Adams and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. By the end of it I had learned that I could write in a style I thought of as Classic English Humour. Douglas had science fiction tied up, Terry had fantasy, but nobody was writing funny horror. And an exchange in Marlowe's The Jew of Malta, combined with a late night viewing of The Omen and a love of Richmal Compton's immortal Just William stories, had put a story into my head, about a demonic baby-swap that goes wrong, in which the Antichrist grows up to be a nice kid, with a dog and a gang.
I wrote the first 5,000 words of William the Antichrist. It had a demon named Crawleigh. He drove a Citroen 2CV, and was ineffectual. Proper demons like Hastur and Ligur loathed him. It had a baby swap. I sent it to a few friends for feedback. Then my graphic novel Sandman happened, and it was almost a year later that the phone rang.
"It's Terry," said Terry. "'Ere. That thing you sent me. Are you doing anything with it?"
"Not really."
"Well, I think I know what happens next. Do you want to sell it to me? Or write it together?"
"Write it together," I said, because I was not stupid, and because that was the nearest I was ever going to get to Michaelangelo phoning to ask if I wanted to paint a ceiling with him.

The string section half reminded me of the music in "Alien".

Re: Radio Programs and Podcasts
Just discovered a great radio show by UK children's author Michael Rosen, called Word of Mouth. A "Series exploring the world of words and the ways in which we use them." Very interesting topics and guests.

Well, I listened to the radio broadcast and liked it a lot. Is the book a lot more comprehensive? I might give it a go some time.

Re: Radio Programs and Podcasts
Its 7.3 on IMDb. From what i can remember of it its main issue is not any of the performances (Figg might not like Capaldi in it but he got good notices at the time for it) its that the budget is pretty poor and it shows. Its also dated in look, in that it looks like cheap tv of the time-

Ah, so it was the novelization that got the plaudits?

Re: Radio Programs and Podcasts
Oddly Ive never read the book, so I dont know if its a good adaptation or not- apparently it is. And the performances got good reviews as well at the time.
Its just it all looks very cheap and nasty.

I actually think he did them concurrently, which struck me as quite interesting and was part of my reason for looking it up.
Ah, well. I might give it a look if I feel like it.

Re: Radio Programs and Podcasts
you have to read it Petty and tell me what you think. Its probably my favourite book after LOTR and LOTR is my numero uno. You will see how wrong Capaldi was for Islington the angel.

Re: Radio Programs and Podcasts
I liked him fine in the tv version- not that I really knew who he was then mind you- I just believed the performance and never questioned it- which for me tends to mean the actor did a good job.
I knew Capaldi from the excellent Scottish film Local Hero-
but I didnt actually realise thats who it was when watching him as Islington as it was years later.
I never really became consciously aware of Capaldi the actor until Malcolm Tucker and the Thick of It, then his involvement in Torchwood and of course onto Who.
So Im not beating his drum just for the sake of it- I just thought he did fine in the role when I watched it, and I remember he got good reviews at the time for it. Not having read the book I cant say if he is well cast or not of course. But I dont see anything wrong or glaring in the performance.
But the book has long been on my 'really should read that' list- Ive read plenty Gaiman comics and loved them, and Ive read every Pratchett book and loved lots of them, and liked most and disliked very few (and then only after his illness), so I really should read it.

I can recommend it very highly!!!Bluebottle wrote:Well, I listened to the radio broadcast and liked it a lot. Is the book a lot more comprehensive? I might give it a go some time.
It's kinda like the same with the film version of "Hogfather" - brilliant, keeping to the book for the most part - but if you've actually read the book then you know that there's so much more to it!!!
Goes for "Neverwhere" and (especially!) "Good Omens" as well

But mostly when I've discovered something interesting someone else has already brought it up. So I'm quite content with following your postings

I think Neverwhere is rare in that every single character is a gem from the smallest to the main character, they are all vibrate with life, even the ones who might not be.

I'm actually following your posts quite often but as I said, until I've made up my own mind about a topic you've already found something else to talk about, so I contribute very little to this forum

Yep, we'd rather you keep ANY conversation going rather than not post. Gets quiet around here otherwise. Orwell famously picks up conversations from years in the past.

I just found out there's a Goon Show episode called The Kippered Herring Gang.
