Andy Serkis 2nd Unit Director
http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2011/04/06/43289-hollywood-reporter-andy-serkis-to-serve-as-second-unit-director-on-the-hobbit/
"Hollywood Reporter: Andy Serkis to serve as Second Unit Director on The Hobbit!
Exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter:
Gollum Actor Andy Serkis to Serve as Second Unit Director on ‘The Hobbit’ (Exclusive)
“There is really a sense of Peter [Jackson] wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Andy Serkis, who played the iconic Gollum in Peter Jackson’sThe Lord of the Rings, is taking on a new role in The Hobbit 1 and 2. In addition to reprising his role as the tragic creature, Serkis also has been tapped by Jackson to serve as second unit director on the two films, which are now in production in New Zealand.
“I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told The Hollywood Reporter. “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.”
"There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material"
Not only once, but twice does this sentence appear in this article - how reassuring, don't you think, Petty?
More related to the topic, perhaps, is the question: Is Serkis any good as a director? Never heard of him directing anything before, but I suppose he could be as good as any.

handy way for PJ to keep him in NZ or any mo cap he wants to do!
And given the amount of time he has worked with PJ it is likely what we will get is mini me stuff!

Dear Illuvatar I nearly fell over laughing at that. You got to be kidding. The three people who least understand LotR on this planet are PJ and his Coven.

so nice to see your uncensored thoughts, although it did set me wondering about all the negative/derogatory names for women as opposed to the few comparable terms for men!

You got me thinking as well now, Kafria! I can't think of that many in English I can think of loads in Norwegian, though

Bad, or lack of role models there! That is not what makes a man. What about honour, and loyalty and courage and dependability? The true marks of a man, or a Scots hobbit!

Re: Andy Serkis 2nd Unit Director
In the case of the lad in question, spoilt with lots of stuff (spent weeks complaining that girlfriend got him a second hand Iphone for his birthday when she could of got a new one for a little more!), with parents who seem unwilling to enforce boundaries, and a lack of serious school response when it was warranted (made counter accusations at a member of staff to muddy the waters). All time is spent trying to get one over on other people, taking mick or undermining people!

What I'd like to know is - are the Serkis bits better than the PJ bits - and how did you find that Scotshobbit bit?

Re: Andy Serkis 2nd Unit Director
From what I remember in the blogs, Serkis mainly got lumbered with the typical responsibilties of 2nd unit, aeriel shots, wide shots and pick ups/inserts etc, so I think we can still blame Jackson...

Well I was gone from the forums for a week until yesterday, so I couldn't say, Petty being Petty I'm sure he'll pop in soon enough, after a few buckies of course.

Rumour has irt he is locked in his barrell with several barrels of buckie and he won't leave until he's finished all of them, it being winter in Scotshobbitland (and never Erumas due to a witch who made everything icy cold)(at least, I think it was Scostshobbitland).

True, but, seeing as he's housed in his very own distillery, nailed to the floor in case of "Acts of God" , (& that woman has a VERY stern look on her face ! nothings getting past HER!) One can assume Petty can & will survive a holocaust , nuclear fallout & Crabbit Master self made methane !

thats funny I heard a rumour he was re-filming the Whole of the Hobbit and when he got to the barrels scenes it all ground to a halt because he had to drink one dry before he could get in one. Then he found that yes, barrels do actually take on water, and no, they dont stay upright, nor can you dance on someones head whilst in one. I heard he got carried off by the current and ended up in Oz, the Ozzies couldnt make their minds up whether to eat him or turn him into a craven idol, and while they were arguing round the barbie he escaped on a steamer headed for Mancuniastan where a local gave him a silver 5 bob piece to take a donkey back up to Scotsidiotstan. Where he is now but asleep .

That sounds more probable than my theory Figgy ! Do you think Petty's related to Baron Munchhausen by any chance ? thats why he can get involved in totally wild adventures & yet come out in one piece ?

Re: Andy Serkis 2nd Unit Director
When I watched the blogs on The Hobbit there is a piece where everyone else it seems has gone on holiday and Andy is going too, but he sits with Peter and they talk about things. Andy is indeed directing and has been for a while and he understands how tired Peter is, how exacting and tiring directing is and being responsible for so much. He talks about how he had to learn to immerse himself in all things again.
He is a very intelligent man and he happens to think a lot like Peter. Since he brought so much to the table as Gollum, I think he has a pretty good grasp of things Just because we might not like all that he does, I personally hate what they have done with the new Sherlock Holmes, we can admire the unfathomable stuff they know and have applied. I cannot respect just picking something apart and the people when they do any little thing when we couldn't find our way through the camps they set up.
Hugo Weaving is a brilliant man and I respect his ideas. Because no one else has taken on such a mega attempt at doing all this, we cannot compare. Until there is how can we know if someone else adapts it even more liberally? I always wonder why then a zillion people don't stay home and save their shillings and just read the books.
It is just that I wish people would read and watch and discover the nuances that JRR put into his writing, Then would there ever be discussions enough to last our lifetime!
