Happy Hogmanay!
Happy New Year Forumshirelians!
Up yir trumpets!
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne* ?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp !
and surely I’ll be mine !
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
frae morning sun till dine ;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere !
and gie's a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.
Slainte Mhath!

Re: Happy Hogmanay!
I've always wondered what 'auld lang syne' means in a civilized language, Petty.
And what's a 'gude-willy'? Sounds fun.
Indeed, could you translate the whole thing from Scotshobbitish, please.

Re: Happy Hogmanay!
could you translate the whole thing from Scotshobbitish, please.- Orwell
What all of it? (And that was the translation I put up! )
Well you did say please and I am pleasantly pickled, so Ill have a bloody go! (with drunken annotations)
Ok- first there is no direct translation of the phrase 'auld lang syne' to english thats accurate as it depends on the context of use- but the closest accurate translation of the meaning would be something like- for old time sake, or for the sake of all the time thats passed since.
The first verse uses both meanings when it proposes two questions in the opening two lines -
Should we just forget about people we have known well in the past and not think about them?
And should we forget about old friends and the time thats passed since?
The chorus provides the answer-
Jo just means 'dear' so the first line could be rendered-
'for old times sake, my dear,'
and goes on to say that no, even after time has passed you should still think well of them.
The second verse is Burns, being a good Scot, just pointing out that whilst these sentiments are all very well well he hasnt gone mad and started proposing something crazy, like putting his hand in his sporran for a round.
So the second verse opens with him making this very clear to prevent expensive misunderstandings -
'surely you will buy your own pint cup!
and surely I'll buy mine!'
(ok it could also be taken as saying that if I am going to remember you with kindness, you should also remember me with kindness, for the sake of old times together)
Third verse is remembering things you did together-
braes are slopes on hillsides and gowans are daisies, so the first two lines are remembering running about the hills together among the daisies.
The last two lines of the verse point out that a lot of time has passed since those days- 'we've wandered many a weary foot' has the same meaning as the modern phrase- 'a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then'.
The fourth verse is still in remembering mood, a burn is a small stream, it then goes on to say that since then they have been separated by the broadness of the sea (referring to the Scottish diaspora after the Clearances that saw so many Scots end up in the US and Canada and Australia)
The final verse is about offering your hand to your old friend across the memory of time and distance, and taking their hand in return.
It ends with the idea that both will then have a right good drink in good will together (sorry Orwell buts that's what a 'right gude-willy waught' is- literally a 'right goodwill draught') for the sake of old times.
Hope that helps, or even makes sense!

Re: Happy Hogmanay!
just won over someone in chess (who is pretty good and who i never win over), half an hour before it turned to 2014 i am so happy he was drunk and made some stupid ass moves, but still well. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! i've been up all night... (it's 7.12 now) we played chess, drank, watched movies.
Re: Happy Hogmanay!
What?! Are you implying being drunk doesn't improve someones chess game?
(And if teenagers today spend new year getting drunk and then playing each other at chess, well things have changed since I was a drunk 19 year old thats for sure and not just the state of my liver!)

Re: Happy Hogmanay!
well.. i am not most 19 year olds, i thought you'd gathered as much by now i would never have won though if we haven't done shots before... (i didn't drink wine with the food so i wasn't that overly affected.. a bit, but i did plot and win )
Re: Happy Hogmanay!
Well if you were doing shots then I hope it was at least strip chess and then I can have some belief restored in todays teenagers. You'll be telling me next you spent the rest of the night working out maths problems

First of all - happy new year to you all. I ended up playing a bush tucker trial game last night. For anyone that doesnt know what that is, it involves eating things you wouldnt normally eat. I was very close to throwing up on a few occasions!

Haven't you gathered that this is a weird place already, Petty?
