Indeed... What terrible animation...

I'll give you the shot of Bilbo in the troll's hands, and the trolls themselves some of the time, but that image on page one isn't bad at all to my eyes.

Re: Cheap CGI much?
The clothes on the trolls look off, but other than that the initial image looks pretty good to me too.
Re: Cheap CGI much?
At least in that Bakshi scene Gandalf looks genuinely worried, and he doesnt hang about for half a day before falling in either.

The troll clothes were mostly what I was talking about Eldo. Probably didn't make that clear lol. The cliff in the background doesn't quite have the right lighting for the rest of the scene but it's not very discernible. The troll clothes on the other hand are basically flat with the wrinkles and folds merely painted on.

Re: Cheap CGI much?
I'm not VFX expert, but it looks like a rush drop. We know Weta is better than this, so I can only assume they just didn't have the time to bring their A game for every shot. The disappointing thing is how many iffy shots there were, though. (The bunny chase was another bad one.)
Re: Cheap CGI much?
although from what I remember of the Elves in the trees over the barrel ride they dont look much cop either.

They look like fake rubber people.

Re: Cheap CGI much?
The folds in the clothes look like textures only. Very gross.

Yep, this would be far far better if they were painted foam models too! I haven't seen that quality of animation in a computer game for at least 5 years. Very very disappointing, particularly from Weta and particularly given the ginormous budget afforded to these films. Would have to check it out again but I think Born Of Hope's budget CGI troll was better than this - certainly for the money!!

Re: Cheap CGI much?
The clothes look like wrinkled, lined leather to me. I don't see what all the fuss is about.
It seems rather hyperbolic to say that Born of Hope had a better troll.
What is of real food for thought here is that the stone trolls in LotR should have been naked in their scene. Perhaps they were?
