Re: Ralph Bakshi version
There are some things you are cut out for & some things you are not. Tolkien I think knew where to draw the line with Bilbo. I dont believe he wanted to grow into a "super hero", I believe he wanted Bilbo to stay grounded, be normal but just have that bit of added spark that all of us have when we need it. Bilbo needs to stay on & tell or warn others of what he's seen & done. Tolkien planned for him to have a long life because, obviously,he had now found The Ring. Bilbo is the grounding factor, he keeps our feet on the ground & our senses contained.

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
Yeah. I think Tolkien would have looked at Bilbo killing the warg and orc and been like, " Dude, WTF? "

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
That has been my point all along. Tolkien spent a lot of time giving his world and stories an inner logic. Which Walsh and Boyens seem completely blind to.
How could they keep making these story decisions that do nothing but screw with the inner logic of the story if they were aware?
Sadly it ends up saying a whole lot about the quality of Oscar winning screen writers.

First word that springs to mind Blue is "Braindead", PJs film with Fran Walsh, casting by Fran Walsh, a role in the film by fran bloody Walsh, a bit part starring good old PJ, Visual effects by PJ, etc etc. But "braindead" seems apt to me.

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
A better comparison would be Rankin/Bass, since they made The Hobbit and actually managed to turn in a finished film.
Re: Ralph Bakshi version
They also did RotK, which also sucked.

No matter how shitty DOS turns out, it will never improve the awful animation and rotoscoping in Bakshi's LOTR.

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
I'd say the Bakshi's films faults are missteps. But Jackson does this shit on purpose.

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
Yeah thats the difference for me too Raddy and why I give Bakshi more leeway than PJ- Bakshi's effort seems to me a well intentioned try that doesnt work properly.
PJ's versions strike me as completely deliberate and to do exactly what PJ intended them to do.

I'm not a fan of either R/B movie, trust me. But I do think they're better than Bakshi's.Radaghast wrote:They also did RotK, which also sucked.
Re: Ralph Bakshi version
Honestly, to me, most of Bakshi's creative decisions can only be explained by cocaine.Pettytyrant101 wrote:Yeah thats the difference for me too Raddy and why I give Bakshi more leeway than PJ- Bakshi's effort seems to me a well intentioned try that doesnt work properly.

Re: Ralph Bakshi version
Yeah, that too
But as for R/B, fucking Shaggy as the voice of Merry?! "Like, yoiks, Scoob! It's the Black Riders!"

That's the Red Letter Guy, right? The one who does those Star Wars PT critiques? Those are hilarious.

- The songs are fucking ridiculous but oddly ear-wormy.
Re: Ralph Bakshi version
I want to see a Plinkett review of The Hobbit movies, but he and Jay seemed to enjoy AUJ slightly. They're not as close to the books as we are, so they don't seem to care about all the stupid changes.
