Yo no hablo espanol..erm... Only... en piquito? No that's not right...Wait yes it is, I just spelled it wrong. Un poquito!

Edit:
Was that bit on the other page Mexican-Spanish, and not Spanish-Spanish?

It was an attempt at mexican spanish, but a Mexican would never say they speak mexican.

Re: Books!
Yeah nice one Lance. Perhaps a chapter to whet our appetites? Actually I suppose that might be legally tricky if you plan on selling the manuscript to someone.
Anyhoo, Merchant of Venice is pissing me off. Bassanio is a dick to his friends and wife, and Portia's courtroom trickery is unlawful B.S.

Let's give this a try...
As one begins the story of the transition from the preindustrial to the modern world by examining the history of the first country to make the leap, one question comes to mind almost automatically. Why did the process of industrialization in England culminate in the establishment of a relatively free society?
...Huh.

Re: Books!
I'm assuming it's correct to start with the introduction?
hmm, layers to unravel there.
The first time I ever saw my grandmother drink alcohol was when I saw her accept a small glass of champagne on her 100th birthday.

For Eldo's, I'd say that his love-life is kind of analytical, and focused on the origins of things.

Re: Books!
Been looking for this book on audio cd. Finally found it, but was going to cost over $300 (10 books)
Wasn't going to pay that so after more searching found it for just over $200. Fair enough i thought
just about worn my lotr's cd's out. Then found out that there was no shipping to Australia. Anyway
to cut a long story short my wife found it for $54 and $20 shipping. Wait there's more. Not only do i get the 10
books on cd. I get all 18 books David Eddings wrote on audio cd as well.

Re: Books!
{{{You know Ive never read any Eddings, just sort of passed me by. I assume you recommend them Chris given what you were willing to pay for the audios! But would rather start with reading a book as I prefer to do that before listening to audio versions. Whats the first one? }}}

Long ago, the evil God Torak fought a war to obtain an object of immense power - the Orb of Aldur. But Torak was defeated and the Orb reclaimed by Belgarath the sorcerer.
Garion, a young farm lad, loves the story when he first hears it from the old storyteller. But it has nothing to do with him. Or does it? For the stories also tell of a prophecy that must be fulfilled - a destiny handed down through the generations.
And Torak is stirring again . . .

Re: Books!
I got a collection of Kafka books and stories for christmas from a friend at work, mostly because of an internal joke we have, but since he gave it to me I decided to read it. Just finished reading The Trial now - I cannot say that I understand all of it, but what a great read. One of the weirdest, most surreal and thoroughly enjoyable books I have ever read. A christmas present intended as a prank turned out to be one of the best I got, so the joke's on him I won't even try to analyse it here, just wanted to recommend it (though many of you have probably read it at some point). I have read a few of the "classics" before, though mostly from Norwegian and Russian literature, but I'm thinking maybe I should branch out a little, literature-wise - any suggestions from you well-read and learnéd hobbits?

Re: Books!
{{ Personally I like 1984, though its half a normal story narrative and half a political essay- but its an interesting if frightening read and probably something everyone should read at one point. I also like Catch-22 staying in the political realm.
If you want something just as deep but a lot sillier and more fun then you cant go wrong with a modern classic Like Hitchhikers Guide if you've never read it. Or for more serious sci-fi there's plenty to choose form, starting with the grandfather of invasion tales War of the Worlds. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is fun too (though I am going on early teen memories of it here not read again since).
And if you want to go hardcore classic then I like a read of the Epic of Gilgamesh every so often, the oldest recorded story. And best of all the versions of it we have were considered classic literature at the time! (long story but basically the versions we have are from students tablets learning to be scribes in Babylon- at the time Sumerian in which Gilgamesh is written was long out of everyday use, but it had a sort of position bit like Latin does for us. If you couldn't do Sumerian cuneiform you weren't a proper scribe. And Gilgamesh for decades was one of the major prescribed texts they had to translate so there were a hell of a lot copies made over a long period in these scribal schools that were then just discarded on rubbish heaps- and that's why we still have it now. So its classic in the truest sense and literal rubbish at the same time! ). }}

Cheers, petty! I actually have a copy of 1984 on my shelf back home and it's on my list. That Gilgamesh thing could be complete rubbish, I still feel like I have to read it now. Never heard of it, but sounds very interesting
