The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
Dear Forumshirers;
A grave matter has been brought to my attention (on the epic hobbit video thread, if you must know). Norc has informed me that the entire country of Fyordlandia rolls their R's, recklessly, with abandon, with no thought to safety or regulation. In her own words:
"well, there are some people..in some fjords who rolle their R's like the french.
but .. no, .. no... it's mayhem here. regarding the R's."
We've got to get her out.
Where the safety of our younger members are concerned, no effort will be spared. So I'm organizing an expedition. A snatch and grab. (Well, we may stop to sample some of the local tea and fisk, given that the snatchee would make a rather ideal guide, you must agree. But right after that we're hoofing it.) I've laid up a goodly supply of duct tape (multipurpose operational tool), a box of animal crackers, and several layers of earmuffs to deal with what looks like will be an epic winter operation. Anyone else in?
Stay brave, young Norc, we're coming for you!!

Re: The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
Well being a Scotshobbit we also roll our rrrr's with gay abandon in the hills and glens. So I am afraid Halfy I dont see it as intrinsicly dangerous unless you have a stutter, in which case you might never see the other end of some words.
I find the greater danger is when the english try to say loch- the guttural throaty sound required seems quite beyond them and they resort to 'lock'- and just as well as I have seen more than one Englishman get into trouble and die on their own spittle trying to pronouce it correctly. Dangerous stuff!

I would think, being one who lives amongst it, you would be more sensitive to the danger.

Its a fine sign if a lass has mastered a full and fluid rolling of her 'r's.

I'm afraid with you lot just standing around making smart comments Norc will languish forever.
We need some good real Americans to jump in here. Not a dratted R-roller among them.

Re: The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
I always wished I could roll my r's when I was trying to learn foreign languages but I have a really hard time doing it. I used to be jealous of my brother since he could do it with little trouble.

If they know what they're about they just walk up and grab your ass.
Unfortunately almost none of them know what they're about.

Re: The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
If you can make a rrrrrr noise like a kid pretending to be a motorbike then you can do it. Americans! its laziness is what it is. Same with the Aussies, thats why they say g'day, just to bloody lazy to say the whole word. Not like they are in a rush, nohing else to do but lie about on the beach all day taking performance enhancing drugs.

I think you'd like Scots lasses Halfy- an arse grab is usually followed up with such romantic patter as "There's a number for a cab next to my phone, you can call yourself one in the morning." (Genuine chat up line used on me in my mispent but fun youth in a Glasgow nightclub).
ps I walked home, was only about 4 miles and have you seen the price of a cab?

This made me laugh more than it should have.
Re: The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
I may have to postpone the mission to rescue Norc until I've done some fieldwork in Scotland. Lying some groundwork - it's a big world out there and I want to be prepared.
Hold tight, Norclet....Halfy's got some recon to do.

Re: The Expedition to Rescue Young Norc
That's why Yanks and Aussies would be good for this extraction mission. Unfortunately non of the Europeans (including the extractee) understand the need for rescue.
Surrounded by people rolling their R's right and left like Gatling guns, and Norc hasn't gotten the slightest sense of peril. It's enough to make a commando unit rescue team knock off for drinks at the beach.
