David H wrote:The only Takahata film I have on my shelf is Grave of the Fireflies. When I first saw it was so beautifully told that I felt I needed to buy it, but it's so grim that I rarely watch it. It sits on the shelf beside "When the Wind Blows" which is equally human and grim look at nuclear war, but with a British voice. I think that having been born and raised in the middle of the Cold War, I'll always have a troubled love/hate relationship with these kinds of films.
Is Takahata still this heavy?
Grave of the Fireflies is amazing but I've never been able to bring myself to watch it more than once. I walked around feeling depressed for about two days after the one and only time I saw it.
Fortunately Takahata's subsequent films haven't been so dark. Probably my favorite from him is Only Yesterday, which is a movie about a young woman who goes to the countryside to visit family and is intercut with numerous scenes from her childhood. It's a fairly quiet, very character-driven film, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's much warmer than Grave of the Fireflies. He also directed Pom Poko, which I haven't seen but I understand is more of a children's film, and My Neighbors the Yamadas, which is a full-blown comedy.
I think all of these except Only Yesterday have gotten an official U.S. release. Takahata is great in my opinion and deserves more recognition alongside Miyazaki.
NB Have you ever seen Whisper of the Heart? It was one of the first Ghibli films to be directed by someone other than Miyazaki or Takahata and it's probably my favorite from the studio.
Re: What now to look forward to?
Also, the new Star Trek trailer is great. I'm looking forward to this even more now. Go ahead and put it down as one of my most-anticipated movies for 2013.
Re: What now to look forward to?
Is that a bad thing for you?
EDIT: Just saw your second post, I'm confused.

That certainly should clarify things! If not: 17th of May is our constitution day, see the thread Fjordlandia viking bar and kaffiestove... (or whatever it was we called it) from around that date. I'll probably be playing in two parades and "just" walk in one, plus perhaps a round of wake-up marches i the morning.

Re: What now to look forward to?
That St trailer is delibretly evoking bits of ST 2 Warth of Khan- I wonder then if cumberbum is Khan after all.
Carol Marcus, also from that film is in there- I wonder if the Genesis device in some fashion will also feature- and the hands at the glass bit is very reminiscent of the end of Wrath of Khan when Spock sacrifices himself to save the ship and there is funeral scene similar to that in Wrath too.
However there are apprently Klingons in this film- an they dont feature in Wrath of Khan- although they do in its follow on sequel- search for spock....I wonder.

Re: What now to look forward to?
I hope that the trailers are just playing up the similarities to get fans excited and the actual film will have its own story. It'd be a bit anticlimactic for this to just basically be a remake of Wrath of Khan. I don't think that will happen, though.
Re: What now to look forward to?
I saw a trailer for that in front of Django Unchained. It looked okay, but that was mostly in comparison to the rest of the utterly horrible trailers. I might check it out anyway though.
Re: What now to look forward to?
i couldn't see it on youtube as it contained mature stuff LOL so I put it here (little smart trick )
Re: What now to look forward to?
I just watched the last episodes of Merlin. Me sad. Dr Who and Clara, come save me!

And you can always rewatch the xmas ep theres a safe link to it on dailymotion on the Who thread.

Re: What now to look forward to?
well, I have to get a youtube account then and I once tried, but the shit was just so confusing and yeah.. I didn't bother
Re: What now to look forward to?
Eh? YouTube is as easy as any other site to sign up for. It used to be anyway, it's kinda weird now that it's semi-synced up with Google Accounts, but if you already have one of those it's still easy.
Re: What now to look forward to?
There's not much of 'mature' content on youtube anyway Norc. Have Petty pm you some sites. I would, but don't want to be responsible for the consequences.
