PJs meddlings ?
I wasnt sure where to put this post ? but, as I read LOTRs I noticed a little passage that MAYBE PJ & CO read & twisted ? In the book, the Riders of Rohan chapter, there is a rider,by Eomers side that is named Eothain, Eomer gives Aragorn, called Hasufel & says "may he bear you well & to better fortune than Garulf, his late master!"
In the FILM, (the burning of the westfold) a mother calls her son, "Eothain" & tells him to take himself & his sister to Edoras. She saddles a horse for them to ride & the little girl says says Eothain must not ride GARULF as the horse is to strong. ? (am I more soft in the head than I realised I am ?)

As a purist this makes my heart boil with unbridled fury. I noticed this straight away and it ruined the film for me.

Re: PJs meddlings ?
Azriel - good catch. Never paid any attention to those names. In the film, what did Eomer call the horse he gave to Aragorn? I actually thought that bit was well done where he whistles and calls the horses by name. Tolkien would have approved I feel.

Re: PJs meddlings ?
I think Eomer whistles & says "Hasufel,Arod,May these horses bear you to better fortune than their masters" or something like that ?

Re: PJs meddlings ?
I thought it was nice he used existing names, rather than inventing them. Although I dislike the escaping kids scenes a lot. I think it was unecessary and took up valuable screen time.

Re: PJs meddlings ?
Yep, no reason not to recycle names of characters that are mere placeholders in the book.
I was indifferent to the kids, but like the scene only because in the commentaries they talked about the people running around in the background were mainly Maori who kept showing up to be extras. They put wigs on them and called the the "Brohan".

I believe in the book they were offered three horses, Arod and Hasufel were among them, but Gimli refused. also Garulf is a terrible name for a horse, I'm glad they didn't use it for Aragorn's horse, though I would've liked them to have the beginning horse throughout. I like the kids scene, it gives the movie a bit perspective.

Can someone refresh my memory about Gandalf hitting Denethor?
He hits him three times and knocks him out... or at least knocks him down, right?

Re: PJs meddlings ?
Thanks Eldorion... I thought I also recalled only one shot to the stomach area -- meaning maybe that was all Jackson's 'Gandalf' did here, instead of three hittings.
But I can see this was not so. Emphasis on Jackson's Gandalf.

Re: PJs meddlings ?
Okay, I clearly remember having a casting thread, but can't find it. So I just pick something and put this in: we could have had David Bowie as Gandalf!

Re: PJs meddlings ?
I think if Bowie wasn't a high ranking elf he would have played a sinister baddie

Bowie could easily have been Elrond. But I prefer Hugo.

Re: PJs meddlings ?
Originally supposed to only be two films, the adaptation of the "Lord of the Rings" prequel was then stretched into three, each one more terrifically entertaining than the last.
....
We got to sit down with Peter Jackson, who has directed not only ever "Hobbit" film but every "Lord of the Rings" film (and is presumably the second biggest Tolkien nerd in the world after Stephen Colbert)
Where's the vomit emoticon??!!
