well, we learn a lot about all the other countries in the world ^^I had a presentation about Micronesia some time ago. I think the main difference and the reason why may americans know very little of, well, smaller countries and such, is because they learn a lot about their own history, not that it's a bad thing. We also learn about british and american history, and all that follows like india being freed from england and the irish war, in english classes. same as we learn about german culture, society and history in german lessons, alongside the language. I think that is pretty similar, though, the main difference being that they have two history classes, american and the rest, which maybe leaves the smaller countries aside. same as with geography and such. America is so great, huge, that they have to learn about that too. We have a small country. doesn't take long to sum up our history

Yeah but America only has a few hundred years of history at least yours goes back to about 6 thousand years ago Norc- that must add a bit more time to learn.

Americans made more mistakes. that has to be addressed.

I hate the ignorance among some Americans, but people who hate on Americans for absolutely no reason are just as ignorant and stupid as some Americans. In fact, there are retards everywhere.

and we share a lot of history with iceland.. and it's not that diverse.
vikings - vikings going to iceland - vikings writing sagas - chirstianity - norse mythology is forgotten - middle age thing - black death - oh.. we lost our written language and lots of our difficult word-forms because the ones who could write died. 2/3 of the people died - ended under danish ruling as we had no king and whatever - denmark had to give us to sweden because denmark was on napoleon's side during that war - then in 1814 we made a constitution during some confusing times when denmark wanted norway back - still under sweden - in june 1905 we were our own rulers, and we have been ever since, though people voted if we wanted a president or a king. We voted for king and got the danish Prince Carl who changed his name to Haakon (old norse name, also a viking king, bit of a tradition giving heirs proper norwegian names, at least first-names). then followed King Olav and King Harald.

see I can fit our entire history into one paragraph (without looking it up, just checking the dates with my family)

I wasn't being ignorant, it's just so much vaster and it covers so much, because the people are many, and diverse, and came from different places, they did different things and all. It's just a lot more to grasp. bot old and modern history.

same as it is for all of europe(though obviously more since there has been a bit more) it's a lot of history over a big area.

I imagine that even Ally is having one of those occasional halcyon days we all have sooner or later (even Petty). I have a mental picture just now of Ally reclining royally on a deck chair, perhaps stroking her tortoiseshell Whelshhaggis, and sipping from a cup of refreshing Earl Grey tea as she gazes blithely out over Atlantic rollers from her cliff-top balcony in the hamlet of lllwelleddlliddledomffwddrellewwllffyfyd, the place of her ancestors; a full moon - like a heavenly silver dollar - shines benignly in the midnight sky.

Does African or Asian history get taught to school children anywhere? We got a smattering of Latin American history in 5th grade. Not much but at least it was something....

We learn a bit about aisan and african history. Not much though, but the crucial. Like apartheid and nelson mandela and dynasties in china and like when they bound up their feet. but it is minimal. most of what I know i've seen on the telly.

Re stupidity, it wasnt that long ago that I saw a program about stupid Americans versus stupid Brits.... there wasn't much in it you know. I imagine Ally sees a lot of it in the Valleys but being in Essex, I think most of them live here.
