Edit: 44, apparently.
well.. no.. not really, well older, but he just past the therties and.. well.. some people acutally look better with a few gray hairs... Rupert Graves for instant. and George Clooney.. And Billy Boyd. Martin Freeman too actually.
I've got plenty of grey hairs. {{{What about 'jowls', Norc - do you also have something positive to say about 'jowls'? }}}

Hard to imagine Pippin is that .. grown up. (Happy, Petty? ) I've said a lot about their performances in the past, but I think all of them made good hobbits - even Elijah Wood, if you look at the good parts and not the horrible ones (for which I guess it's reasonable to blame the script writers). Sean Astin is still my favourite of the four, in my opinion he deserved an award for his role. He seems to have gone up a size or two, though

Re: Hobbits and Tolkien
I wasn't trying to say that Billy Boyd looks two feet from the grave but I think they made him look younger in LOTR and now -- 12 years after filming -- his age is quite noticeable. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but when I think of Pippin I still think of a younger Hobbit even though I know that Billy Boyd is the oldest of the four actors.

sorry Eldo- was such a shock result I forgot! (plus my usual excuse applies- I was drunk at the time) And besides you don't have a smart uniform like Ringdrotten with shiny buttons.

" The portraits hanging above the fireplace in Bag End are based on the likenesses of director Peter Jackson and producer Fran Walsh."
This surprised me when I read this, I had not paid much attention to the pics on the wall in Bag End before.

Re: Hobbits and Tolkien
Tolkien painted Bilbo with boots on when he was out adventuring. Just saying.

Re: Hobbits and Tolkien
This probably belongs in The Hobbit section, but will do.
I recently discovered my copy of the Hobbit had gone missing, so remedied that with a version that has Tolkien's illustrations (irrelevant to my upcoming point) and so started re-reading it.
In Riddles in the Dark it points out that the goblins did not find Sting because it was small enough that Bilbo typically kept it concealed inside his breaches. Clearly Sting is not large enough to be considered a Hobbit sword, more like a large knife. This is not our typical impression of Sting, and I wonder if Tolkien himself forgot it?

Re: Hobbits and Tolkien
Tolkien did mention somewhere that hobbits wore boots in muddy weather. Have to search for it.
