I think Mrs Figg would be a perfect person to field that question.

Ah, yeah. With cute connotations. Though I think 'spastic' is the more common terminology, at least in western parts.

Re: Hello Norc
So near the beginning of this thread I saw reference to the sister thread on HMN, and one thing leading to another, I have to ask - is this you and your sister, Norc?
the basic atmosphere seems about right.

sorry, i can't spell
Re: Hello Norc
Um, in the UK 'spastic' is a really pretty offensive insult, deriving from people with cerebal palsy and was a common term of abuse in the late 70's and 80's.
Its now one of those words like 'nigger' whose use is considered beyond the pale.
(For the record my favourite term for people with such conditions is a Scots one, considered no less beyond the pale- 'windae-lickers'- this derives from schools in the 80's- where the special needs kids used to get taken out for trips quite often on a minibus- when thats happens it is inevitable at least one of them will attempt to lick the inside of the window they are seated at as it drives off- hence 'windae-lickers')
Given you mention 'cute connotations' Halfy I assume 'spastic' it has different meanings elsewhere. Funny thing language.

Re: Hello Norc
It's not normally deemed offensive here, and is often applied affectionately to the enthusiastic emotional eruptions of teenage girls. As in the nonchalant "yeah, she's kinda spastic."
The picture can be found by googling the full name found in THMN forum. I figure the name is common since several possibilities came up, this one fit the age, demeanor, language, and had what could be a sister. No signs of the towering skill set and intellect we associate with our own dear Norc, but that's all rather hard to convey with the tongue sticking out.

Re: Hello Norc
Yeah, on this site I've also learned not to complement an English lass's fanny. Especially in public.

Re: Hello Norc
Well, I've learned that too. But it's less shocking in America than in Britain - at least as far as the term 'fanny' goes.
I should clarify that spastic is not necessarily affectionate either; just descriptive.

I had no idea spastic was considered offensive in the UK. It's origins in the US might be similar (I'm honestly not sure) but if so then it's like "idiot" in that it has lost its connotations mental health/disease. Except "spaz" can be a term of endearment, unlike "idiot". I guess I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever make it to Europe.
In any event, Norc is definitely cute.
