Nichelle Nichols is gone! Sad

Though I knew she was convinced to remain in her rather limited role by Martin Luther King, and of course had the first inter-racial lip lock, it wasn't until reading her obituary that I found out she was recruited to the Playboy Club by Hugh Hefner, and had a long affair with Gene Rodenberry before he fell in love with Majel Barett. Juicy stuff. Too bad her role was so monotone, she probably could have added some depth and sparks if the writing allowed it.

Film director Wolfgang Peterson kicked the bucket last week. He was 81.

(Das Boot, The Never-ending Story, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm, Troy, etc. )

He did Never Ending Story? Never would have expected that. Far from his best work.

I assume you are talking about the Queen...in which case agreed, I don't think she's long for the world wouldn't be shocked if she has already passed at the time of writing.

I'm not particularly pro or anti-monarchy (rarely give the royals a thought at all) but I've always respected her for the dedication she has to the role and country, it's going to be so so strange when she passes.

Also wondering A) if Charles will pass on the throne on William and B) Will banks, shops etc be closed in mourning? I work overnight shifts so not sure what that would mena for me...

*Edit seeing comments on reddit there's rumours she has passed and it will be announced at 6pm

It does look like preparations for an announcement. Even the BBC news team look like they are prepared to announce something.

I have always thought the monarchy bring something to the country.... maybe not justifying the cost/benefit or whatever but I think it is quite a defining institution as far as what Britain is.

And yes, even more so I think people can learn a lot from the way she has dedicated herself to the role that she inherited. Whether you think there should be a monarch, I dont think you could argue that she has been a great one.

It's official, the Queen passed away this afternoon

https://mobile.twitter.com/RoyalFamily/status/1567928275913121792

As i said above I would not consider myself a royalist...but just in a state of shock now, we have all be expecting this for years but feels surreal.

This is indeed a surprise. Though I did see there was something serious going on with all her children being flown in. I still sort of assumed she'd make it a while longer.

{{ Well thats the telly buggered for at least a month Mad be nothing but retrospectives on our dead Queen and profiles on our new King!
Not bothered by monarchy, overall I think they are good for tourism, bring more in than they cost, and better than a politician as Head of State. And the Elizabeths seem pretty good, that 1 and II put in a power of service. My main concern is that its unfair, on them. Its the life of a slave, a rich slave in a golden cage but its still a slave, your life organised for you, laid out in a diary by civil servants. No thanks.

Weirdest bit of all this will be having Charlie staring up from all those coins and notes from now on so used to seeing the Queens head you dont even think about it.

Also watch out for the government burying bad news and nasty policies under this- especially our new evil most right wing government ever. }

I never thought of that - I suppose they can't swap out all the old money so it will just be on the  new.  But Charley isn't too much longer for this world too I guess (all this healthy eating is sure to kill him), so his notes may become collector's items.

{{ Not just money- everything from police helmets, army stuff, prison names, letterboxes, passports- theres an absolute ton of stuff has ER on it or Her Majesty, all needs to be changed. As Queen the army, police, post office and just about every other major instituion was hers, now its Charles III's and it all needs changed to reflect that. }}

{{ Thats the thing about Monarchy- the institution not the individual is the constant. As Pratchett noted, nothing travels faster than monarchy- the instant the old monarch dies the new one is monarch no matter where inthe world they are. We have King Charles III now (hope he has more luck than the last one!) and the instituitions of state roll on. }}
