for the benefit of us blockheaded non-Fyordlandia hobbits, what exactly do the dots do? For all I know they're purely ornamental, like the poofy balls on top of a knit cap.

The two dots in Amarië tell one that -ie is two syllables.

This mark is not found in Feanor's tengwar, but the Elves would know the proper pronunciation here (long vowels are properly marked however, in both Feanor's tengwar and the Roman Alphabet).

They're a way of indicating that a person or word is particularly metal. Nod
